Slipping something in the drivetrain

I have a 99 maxima se, auto. i think my torque converter is bad, i would be at a stop light and no need for me to stay on the brakes after i made the complete stop because the car sits there. Then as i start to accelerate something is slipping pretty bad then as i gain speed it goes to normal. The same thing happes in reverse have to rev it up to like 2.5 to 3 grand RPM for it to start moving. Can someone please help as to whta the problem is!!
