Setting Timing

Does anyone have information on how to set the timing correctly for a 96 nissan maxima? I was changing the water pump and the timing chain moved. I'm not sure if it is out of time. The Chilton/Haynes manuals describe how to set the timing. Two problems I'm having are that 1. the chain wasn't marked for reference and 2. I can't find the two links that are "darker"(as described in the Haynes guide) than the other links to line up with the camshaft sprockets. If anyone has any tips/suggestions I'd greatly appreciate the help. Thanks

did you have to remove the engine like it says in the Haynes manual? I want to check my timing but I have no way to remove the engine

I had the same problem... including pulling threads when putting the new water pump back in, and then a horrendous chain rattling noise once i got the car started back up again... we supsected the timing chain had moved and the time was off, but then i read, after getting everything taken off the car to take the timing chain cover off... that the rattling sound was normal and would go way after the car ran for a few minutes... we have identified the marker links on the main timing chain... and the marks on the gears... but i can't find any information stating what the proper position is for the markers or how to adjust the cam shafts if needed... first question... is the rattling normal and i can just put everything back together? Second question - does somebody have information about getting the cam shafts lined up correctly... YouTube University has been somewhat helpful, but lacking some key answers...

Why use haynes when you can get the Nissan factory service manual?
