I have a black 99 gle and i really am too lazy to lower it...if i put 18" rims on it (I am fully aware that it will raise the car 1") will it look dumb all around?

Yep
J/K

It depend on you. To me it will because I HATE wheelgap and you will have alot of wheelgap (maybe about 4-5 inches ) if you don't. If you can afford to just lower it. You will LOVE the results

IF YOUR GOING TO THROW 18"s DEFINETLY DROP IT 1 1/2" TO 2". MORE THAN 2" WOULD LOOK EVEN BETTER BUT YOUR GOING TO SCRAPE ALOT AND YOUR WHEEL WELL MIGHT INTERFERE WITH YOUR TIRES. ALSO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LOOSE ANY PERFORMANCE GET SOME LOGHTWEIGHT RIMS(15-22LBS).

On a related note..

18in rims will raise a car obviously but what size tires would be able to offset the larger rim size as not to raise the car at all?
I have maxspeeds and the way my car sits now is perfect. I was planning on 18's but if it's gonna raise my car another inch..hmmm

Yes, it will look stupid.

As William said, it's really a matter of taste. I think aftermarket rims win rubber-band tires look silly with a non-lowered max: it hilights the wheel gap. Mine is not lowered (yet), but my tires are a little bigger so I think it helps. From some angles it looks perfectly fine, while at other angles it does look like a 4x4. I'll lower mine when I get some rims.

it's not too bad, except for those snow hidden pot-holes Sometimes my front lip picks up snow from piles where driveways were plowed into the road.

please lower your car if you put wheels on it.. i mean really, a set of sprint springs are like $120, and keep a decent ride until you can afford some nice struts.. or use h&r or eibachs..

driving around with wheels and no drop is

except in william's case because he is so dead bent against it..

No

Do what you want and what you like. Dont place looks before your needs. I wouldn't mind a small drop with mine, but where I live, and all the roads and miles I drive, a drop is simply impracticle. Almost stupid. Just weigh your needs and what your car needs to do for you, and then make your own decision.

eh, Im pretty sure the ride height is the same regardless of trim package. The SE might ride a bit more firmly but it doesn't look any lower than a GLE or GXE. If in fact it is a bit lower the difference is negligable. Personally I couldn't stand the look of my car on 17s before I lowered it. IMO it really looks ghetto to just slap on some rims, its the little things that make a car look nice, especially when the said car comes with a wheel gap looking like a sedan/suv hybrid.

If you want to keep an awsome ride, but add amazing handling and performance you really don't need to lower it.

KYB AGX's
Addco Rear Sway Bar
Front Strut Tower Brace
Some nice sticky 17 inch wheels-n-tires

Keep it spotless & black out the wheel wells and you wind up with something like this.

Yes very good example, you'll like you're ready to go offroading but with the wrong tires.

since when does changing wheels....in this example stock to 18's raise the car??

The distance from the center to the end of the tire is the same if u have 16's or 18's if u stay with in proportion with rimsize to tire thickness. like: 215/50/16 & 215/40/18 will be the same size and won't raise or lower your car last time i checked.

correct me if im wrong.

Along the same lines..
People say a larger wheel will also decrese the gap between the tire and fender. If you stay proporational with the tires and wheel with 18's as compared to 16's wouldnt the gap be exactly the same?

bigger wheels exaggerate the wheel gap more more. same distance between well and tire....

16" 55/215
17" 45/235
18" 40/235 all same in diameter... just the 18" will make the gap look bigger cause of the lower profile.
