Vehicle Speed Sensor

Pulled the CEL code 0104 (Vehicle Speed Sensor) yesterday. Came on while driving down the highway at 70 mph. No adverse affects happened prior to or after the CEL illuminated. After getting home I checked all the harnesses to proper connection. I thought it was the MAF at first as I changed the air filter last week. But the VSS is a first for me. I reset the ECU and the light hasn't came on yet (crossing fingers). Anybody have some insight to this sensor? Tips & tricks are welcome.

I have had both of my speed sensors replaced.

There is one on the transaxle and is inexpensive to replace ($100). The other is in the instrument cluster and requires a new cluster ($500). The dealer service said this is a common problem to have the sensor go. I had the $100 sensor replaced, but it later required the $500 sensor to get replaced too.

The speed sensor only affected my cruise control, but I required it. Perhaps as long as your speedometer still seems accurate, you may not need to worry about it. I'm not an expert, just a thought on the subject.

By the way, a new instrument cluster is a special order because someone has to pre-set the odometer to what your car is currently at. This may eliminate doing it on your own.
