I'm just finishing the first tank of gas (93 octane) in my 95 SE. It looks like a tank is going to take me just over 300 miles. Is that typical? if not, what can I do to make it better.?

Thanks!

That sounds about average for regular everyday drving. If it was mostly highway then it sounds low. how many MPG are you getting? For normal driving (not highway) I usually get about 20-21 MPG.

I hope you get over 300 miles

I usually fill at 415. I drive a lot of mixed freeway and city driving, but I drive more at night. I think this is what improves my mileage so much, no rush hour traffic and I make a lot more signals on the streets. I like to avoid stopping, I really hate first gear in this car.

bad gas miles

I seem to be getting horrible gas mileage. I filled it less than a week ago, and I'm already down below half. I usally fill it after it drops below a quater tank left. I drive locally, school and back and small trips in between usually during the week, and highway trips on the weekends. I drive it nicely, don't gun, rarely go over 65 mph.I haven't even gotten more than 100 miles on my last fill and its almost near empty. Is there anything i can do to improve this?

100 miles and on empty is BAD! The tank is 18+ gallons so you figure with 3 gallons left you are going thru 15 gallons in 100 miles. That's 6.66 MPG. Can't be or else you got problems. Get a tuneup ASAP. My Max has 100k and I usually shift my 5 sped around 3000 rpm and I get 24 in mixed driving.

When i first got my Max I was getting about 310 miles per tank. I gave it a full tune up myself, ran 3 tanks of injector cleaner through it, and had the fuel injection cleaning service performed at the dealer. Keeping the rpms below 3000 for normal driving and shifting to neutral at all red lights and long stops (if you have a slushbox).
Now I can get 420 miles right when the low fuel light comes on.

There are a couple of things that could cause bad MPG.

All of these guys here are correct.

1.The first of course is driving to redline through every gear.
This doesnt't help gas mileage. Only your fun factor.

2.However, from what Nissan has told us, if you drive like a maniac for half tank then a granny for the second half of the tank you'll still get poor gas mileage BECAUSE... the cars computer is thinking you need more gas to drive sporty and it takes a half tank or two to assimilate to the fuel efficient granny driving method. worth 3 to 5 mpg.
I thought it was BS. But try it. Drive like a granny for several tanks then record it. Drive like a Maximaniac for half and granny for half and you'll see. Persnally I drive like a maximaniac 75% -I get 21mpg and couldn't be happier.

3.Also if you have any exhast or intake mods your mileage and the life of your car increases. The engine doesnt have to work as hard sucking and blowing. worth 1 to 3 mpg.

4. Use the STP fuel cleaner or have the engine flushed by your local shop. If anything is clogged this is worth 5mpg.

5. the most obvious - if you drive in stop and go traffic- you're gonna lose.5 to 10 tp 15 to etc. mpg. This just depends on how long you sit.

Lastly I have seen this car get close to 31 mpg. 95 GXE auto that my wife drives 50 mph to work and back -no stops.
If they gave the max a 5th gear for auto's and a 6th gear for manuals this thing would be in the fuel sipping civic class easy.(35mpg) But what fun would that be?

1. I never redline, always shift around 3 or 4 rpms

3. If I get an intake, will my car fail NJ inspection? My friends were telling me that you can't make any non factory mods on any car.

5. I drive about 2 miles to school and back, go through about 3 traffic lights each way. stopping at one only half the time and usually catching it on green (I have good luck with that).

But I still get **** poor mileage. My tanks almost at E and I don't think its been over 100 since its last fill all the way with premium.

You've got a problem then. Sounds about 7 or 8 MPG.

Replace the fuel filter, and clean the injectors, and most iportantly go somewhere else to get gas.
Don't always fill up at the same place. If they have accidentaly switched the pumps (happens more than you might think) your car will still run but you'll get crap for mileage. So shop around for gas as a rule.
If non of this works go to a dealer and have em check the CPU - It may be just be a computer glitch that can be reset.

You can make upgrades to the exhaust and what not but to pass inspection your car has to be warmed up. A cold start inspection wil get you fined. Good luck man..

1999 SE mileage

I have a 99 SE 5 speed with around 26K miles, I get between 22-23 in city driving and more like 25-26 on the highway. You have to figure that F to E is 15 gallons + 3 gallons in reserve.
