gas pump problem

i have a 99 maxima... about two weeks ago i had trouble pumping gas... my needle read at a quarter tank, and i went to go pump my gas and it clicked like it was full after about 1 gallon. it continously did this, and i tried putting the nozzle in differently and pumping it slower, but it still did the same thing. even now , 2 weeks later, the same thing is happening.
has this happened to anyone else.. if so.. please let me kno what's wrong and wat i can do. thanks

Ya thats happened to me too, but only sometimes...Seems like it only happened at shell stations i went to. Havent had that problem in a while, but it is rather annoying.

Does this only happen at one station or is it more than one? If it's only one then I would say that it's the pumps at that station.

If however it's happening at all of the stations then start taking apart the "filler hose" that goes from the fuel door to the tank and see if you can find any obstructions. That would be the first place that I would start.

Everytime I go to BP, when I put in gas, it would put in about a nickels worth, then stop....hold down the trigger again, nickels worth. Every single time, and only at BP.

I've had this problem several times with different rental cars and at different stations. I think it's just certain gas pumps. So far I havent had this happen with my Max though.

Hey I think I might have the solution, try pushing it all the way in, it feels like a spring is in between it.

My tank reads 3/4 full on a full tank of gas. I fill up almost 60 liters (CDN = Liters) and it always reads 3/4 tank. Funny thing is that I always filled up Shell...then for a week I tried out some Esso etc...and for the first time it went to full in almost a year.

So just watch how much gas you put in to make sure you really are at full but the car is reading 3/4 only.

Tell me what you find out. Is it a sensor?
