Question (since search is down)

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and am looking at purchasing a 1998 Maxima SE. What are some of the problems I can expect? It has 97,000 miles on it, but looks to be in great shape. Are there any substantial repairs I should be expecting?

Thanks,

Erik

Check to see if it had it's 90K service done, regular maintenance, and if it has any history. Check the car for noises and good luck.

I was mainly wondering if there were any signifact tranny problems, etc. Like on my 2001 Jetta, the window regulators tend to break, or the coilpacks tend to go bad. Is there anything like that on a Maxima?

Thanks again,

Erik

What is supposed to be done at the 90k service? She had all the belts replaced, brakes replaced and a new battery.

Ignition coils go bad on these too. They are about $60- $80 dollars each depend on where you buy them. Other than that everything else is standard.

How easy is it to work on the engine? Do I have to do things like remove the intake manifold to get to the coils? I am pretty well versed around cars, and would prefer not to take it in if I do not have to. The car that I am looking at seems like a really good deal, though I am a little leary. It is a 1998 SE with 97,000 miles. It is fully loaded, and was totally repainted in 2001 because of hail damage. She wants $7999 and the book on it (according to Edmunds) is around $9500 for St. Paul, MN. I just want to make sure there is not anything specific I should be looking for when I go look at it on Thursday.

Thanks again,

Erik

I own a 98 SE and haven't had any significant problems (70K miles). The only things that are really notable are...

Front strut is trashed and needs to be replaced. I was planning on putting in H&R and AGX anyway

There is an alternator recall...you can get 5the alternator replaced for free if it hasn't been already.

Aftermarket fog light bulbs blow CONSTANTLY...stock ones would probably be better.

Other than that just regular maintinance, expensive gas, and expensive oil have kept the car running well so far (knock on wood).
