Whistling noise at idle

Whistling noise at idle
When my engine reaches normal operating temperature, at an idle I get this loud whistling noise comming from the engine. Sounds like a vacuum leak. Starts about 45 seconds before the cooling fan cycles on, and finally stopps after the fan turns off.
It will repeat this cycle constantly. I cannot trace where it would be comming from. It is more predominant on the alternator side of the engine.
I have tried removing the belts and the noise is still there....(did this when I was changing out my belts)
This has been going on for about a year (since I got the car) I notice it more now because the warmer weather is here and I have my windows open now
Someone else has to have this as well.........I hope!
PS this is a stock engine with NO mods

1: please, what year max.
2. Possibly, depending on year, sh1tty alternator. When you checked the belts, did you check tensioners too? (i assume nothing)
3. I love that charger, i should dig up some pics of my dad's old one to show you.

Thanks for the reply......after all the explaining I did, I forgot to mention its a '96 GLE.....sorry
I replaced the tensioner when I did the belts.....also as I stated I ran the car without the belts and the noise was still there.....

The noise only occurrs at idle weather in drive or neutral....as soon as the rpms rise the noise stops only to resume when the rpms drop back to idle.
This is all below 1000 rpm. The noise will stop with the slightest tap of the accelerator......
Thanks to all that have replied

i have the same problem with my 96 gle. it almost sounds like its coming fromt the area of the rad fan... i first notcied it when i went through my buddies garage door (long story tried to avoid being hit by a crazy women in a minivan and his driveway was all ice) but i never really paid attention until after that so i'm not sure whether or not the two are related.

OK, this is just a guess but I've heard it said that the motor mounts emit a strange noise. On GLE's, they are liquid filled and adjustable, different from at idle than in motion.
Test: disconnect the cable leading up to the motor mounts
