Woohoo.. recall for me, free repair!

So I finally go to Nissan for a vehicle inspection just to make sure the '96 Maxima I got is as good as drives and looks. The inspection came out pretty much perfect except for possibly needing my drive belts changed and some new brake pads.

Then the service guy brought up the fact that my '96 Max still has warranty for the CEL problem. I was in aw, my CEL comes on every so often with the 0304 and 0707 codes, and I just keep reseting them waiting to replace my Rear O2 Sensor and maybe even my knock sensor. So they just simply told me under this 'old' campaign, they'll replace pretty much everything that needs to replace, like the Rear O2 Sensor and what not. Heh..

This is sweet, maybe old news for other owners, but I didn't know of such a 'recall' or 'campaign' as the service guy said. Totally free, I'm happy.

Just gotta wait for them to get all the remaining replacement parts they gotta change, not exactly sure what they are, but for sure I know they are doing the Rear O2, maybe even the knock. We'll see.

Sorry for the long post, just had to say I'm damned happy that my CEL has been and will be debugged...

What exactly was included under the recall? I've been getting bad gas mileage and people say the o2 sensor might be the culprit. I also have a '96 Max, might go check it out...

I'm not sure, gotta wait until they have the parts they supposedly don't have to do the repair. Once it get's done, I'll let you know.

But I was actually hoping someone else here had the same type of work done...

Anyone?

I went to my dealer, gave them my VIN, and said that there were no outstanding recalls on my car (I was asking about the alternator). Can they tell whether the problem has already been fixed if they only look at the VIN? (BTW, my VIN number is in the range for alternator recalls).

My service guy basically said this car hasn't gone through this campaign (so it's not just Canada as he said before). He checks the records online (Nissan Online??). He told me the campaign is an old one and has something to do with the CEL and the parts affected. He did not tell me what exactly will be replaced but I'm thinking he's doing the Rear O2 Sensor and other things as that's what I brought up with him.

He checked it via the VIN through some central Nissan system. It's possible that it's for the 95's and early 96's ...

EDIT: One more thing, he said it's not a normal recall, it's some sort of CEL problem/replacement campaign. I'll try to get more info Monday.

It's call Voluntary Service Campaign I.D.# P8132 & P8152,for 96 Maxima MIL Issues. They will replace all 3 O2 sensors, install water separator kit(if you don't have one)and inspect Evap vent control valve(if bad they will replace),but not all the car are cover. So you will have to call your dealer and see if your car are cover, only when your CEL are on.Hope this will help someone with the 96 and CEL problem.Good Luck to your.

Wow, damned. I assume you've got some experience in this department

Thank you for that info, it's helpful. As far as the service guy said, he said it'll be all covered (Whatever they get some the test.) My CEL is on now, I'll probably leave it on until I get to bring it in for the repair.

Thanks 96_vqmax.

So from what I can tell, this isn't widely known that there may be a problem with the 96's. So really though, you guys with the 96's -- have you had this work done or know of it being done before?

I'm curious to know.

I called 800-nissan1 after a dealer had told me to bring my car in for the recall and then after i got there a week later they told me my car is too old so they can no longer do it. Nissan America told me that its not exactly a recall but an extension of warranty. The initial warranty is like 36/30,000 miles or something, and nissan extended the warranty on the emission system to 60/60,000. My car is a 95 with 150K and most likely the original o2 sensors. So i guess you are lucky for having your dealer actually do the recall. I would have gone to your dealer, but I don't think I am in the mood to drive to BC !

My CEL is back on.. I guess I might as well leave it on for until they call me in for the repair (hopefully in this week).

Hmm, car seems to run slightly different with the CEL on, car seems to hesistate a bit at low RPM.

So... the car is at the dealer now..

So... Just dropped off the car to do this recall/campaign thing. But it makes me wonder if they'll replace the Knock Sensor? Before, the service guy just said they replace certain parts and whatever trouble codes come up on the ECU.

Not likely eh.. Hmm.. Wonder if I'll get lucky or get raped somehow (ie. Service Guy: Let's break something.. )

We'll find out what's been done around noon, wee....

So this is what they replaced..

Front and Rear O2 Sensor's - all 3.
226A0-40U62 SENSOR
22690-40U06 SENSOR
22690-40U16 SENSOR

Check/Replace EVAP Canister
14950-56U18 CANISTER

Install Water Seporator
18795-40U25 VALVE

Vent Control Valve-RP
14935-54U04 VALVE

---

Wonder how much the parts would've totalled up to alone. Car runs a lot better now. Not really sure why this recall/campaign was needed, except that it would've triggered the CEL a lot. Oddly enough, the previous owner basically never brought the car to a Nissan dealer since they had it.
