Questions for installing new dash trim kit
Questions for installing new dash trim kit
I'm preparing to install my new brushed aluminum dash kit for my all-black interior '96 Maxima SE. But I want to make sure I do this w/out any mistakes. Since the directions are 6 very vague steps, I do have a couple of questions that the directions fail to answer:
1. The directions say if I have any armoral on the dash the pieces won't stick. Okay, what if I applied armoral a week ago? Does it still mean that there's armoral on the dash and the pieces won't stick?
2. The directions say I have approx. 1 minute to apply one of the two the "adhesive promoter applicator" to the dash panel of the car after I open it, and then after I open the next one, a minute as well. Does this include the side panels on the doors as well, and the AC vents, etc.? I ask this because I think it's kind of crazy having to race from the two front doors to the two back doors and filling tiny spaces that are on the panels where the locks and window buttons are. In other words, does every single place where I plan to apply the pieces have to have this glue on them?
3. The directions say I should warm up the pieces in the sun, or with a hair dryer. How warm should they be? They say until flexible but they're already flexible to begin with.
4. And just for the hell of it, has anyone applied the pieces w/out using this "adhesive promoter applicator?" Because I tried out some of the pieces that didn't fit my specific dash (and are to be discarded) and they seemed extremely sticky and stuck to other objects very well.
Well, hopefully I can get these answers by tomorrow because that's when I plan to install this stuff. Thanks for your time!

Same thing here, bought my wood dash kit over ebay. When I received it, I just cleaned all the areas where the kit was going to be placed, I used that adhesive wipe that came with the kit. Its been around half a year and no problems whatsoever, its never comming off!
Maybe I can help you here. If you used Armor All a week ago, clean your dash with rubbing alcohol, acetone, or something similar. We manufacturer dash kits, and you would not believe how much armor all affects the adhesion of the 3M tape.
The adhesion promoter does work, make sure to use it. The pieces may seem to stick now, but they will not stick as well without the promoter and you may run into problems in the future. Plus the promoter helps if you have any Armor All residue on your dash.
The 1 minute thing you don't have to worry about, you truthfully have a few minutes. The promoter just evaporates really fast. So open one, apply it, then open the other. You don't have to apply the pieces immediately afterwards, you can take your time. Think of the promoter as a treatment. It's supposed to dry before you install the piece.

are there any kits out there that have actual parts that you replace? I would love to do a Carbon Fiber dash kit in my 96 Maxima SE, but I dont really want a kit that has pieces attached with tape or adhisive.....
Any suggestions?
Any suggestions?
Unfortunately no. It's just not feasible.

do yourself a favor and go to the hardware store and pick up some dentatured alcohol. Use it to prep the area...get all that armor all crap off. Denatured Alcohol is funny stuff...you get some on the rag, and it dries very fast. Note to others that may read..this is not a replacement for armor all, it is to remove and clean the surface.
By any chance did you ever finish applying your kit? You have any pics you can post? I'm in the same boat as you are with my black leather interior and I wanted to get the aluminum kit, but I didnt want it to look cheap or ghetto. I want to hear it from someone who actually has it and likes it. Thanks.
