Recently noticed drop in RPM's at idle ( with transmission in D , foot on the brake) especially after headlights are turned on.
Is this a sign of alternator getting ready to go bad, or could be the Idle Air Control Valve in need of cleaning or replacemant,
or should I just adjust the RPM's a bit ?
Please respond with any suggestions.

Hey,
I used to have those problems too with our auto.
Have you checked your battery lately? How old is it and/or what condition is it in? I was in the same position as you for a long time and never figured out the problem. I tried cleaning the TB, adjusting the idle speed, both through the TB screw and the IACV screw (don't do either) etc. The problem had to do with the battery. We replaced it and everything's been running smooth for nearly a year now.
It might be a different case for you, but I'm just throwing out one possibility. Good luck nick.

I was just gonna post the same problem. My car idles really bad sometimes (around 500). If I'm driving at a nominal speed, then hammer the brakes, my rpm's drop almost to 100. On rare occasions, it will just die...which happened this morning. I was doing 75 on the highway, had to slam the brakes, the rpms dropped till the car died.....NOT FUN!! Almost drilled the car in front of me, and there was a huge semi behing me (construction). I have NO clue what's wrong (0505 when I pulled the codes). I cleaned the TB, but didn't help.

that certainly sounds like your IACV ....check if your hoses are split or if its connected properly (maybe you just intalled an intake recently?)....Wouldn't hurt to clean the IACV (which I still havent ogtten around to doing Originally posted by MaximusMax

Where is the IACV? Is there a DIY somewhere, or do I need to get the Chiltons/Haynes manual? Thanks for the advice!!! Greatly appreciated....need to get this fixed before my car dies on the highway again.Originally posted by Jamsan

Thanks for the tip....what/how should I do this? I've heard people have used a dremel to get all the acid buildup of the terminals, but I wasn't sure.Originally posted by 96SE5Spd

or a cup of water with a couple spoons of baking soda. also buy those felt teminal washers that go on top of the terminals that help abosorb and neutralize the acid.Originally posted by TurDz
