buying used tires in an hour - How to assess tread life
Hey Guys,
Going out to get some used tires in a hour or so.
How do I determine what tread life is left?
I heard something about a a penny or dime test but what percentage coverage of the coin is considered 100% treadlife?
Thanks guys,
I would search but it is down...

Never bought used tires before, but just see if they have a threadwear gauge on hand, and that will tell you exactly what you want.. I know they have them at costco tire center, so hopefully a used tire center would have one.
Tread depth gauge
It's probably too late for you now, but you can buy a tread depth gauge at the auto parts store for a few bucks. It measures tread depth in 32's of an inch. It's good for keeping track of how your tires are wearing, including differences from inner to outer edge caused by uneven wear. It can show problems with tire wear before you can see it with your eyes, so you can fix it before you ruin the tires.
you can use a penny....... stick the edge of a penny into the groove of the tire with the top of Lincolns head pointed down..... If the tread doesnt go up to his head, then the tread is too thin, if the tread goes over his head or beyond, then the tires are good
