Fuel Cut-Off Problem

I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima GXE w/ Auto Trans. Engine cannot rev beyond 2000 rpms. It's seems like the fuel cut-off is kicking in too early. Also a little hard to start when engine is cold. Both cooling fans seem to run constantly when ever the engine is running. There are no engine codes and everything else seems to operate normally. The problem seemed to have started all at once when I tried to start it yesterday morning. Does anyone have any have any idea what the problem could be? Also, when you turn the screw on the ECU, Aren't you supposed to get a confirmation LED flash from the ECU? Any help would be appreciated.

you might want to check up on your MAF.

I concur. The ECU defaults to a mode that does not allow the engine to rev over 2K rpm if the MAF sensor is not functioning properly.

Wouldn't it throw a code then? Anyways, thanks for the information. I'll swap it out with another one.

I just remembered that the coolant temp sensor is also part of the fail safe system. Could that explain both fans running constantly whenever the engine is actually running? Anyone with thoughts on this? Or maybe the fans just go into this mode whenever any fail-safe componet fails.

And does anyone know whether or not you're supposed to get a LED confirmation flash at the ECU when you go into Diagnostic Mode?

There is no led on the ecu, the MIL will flash when the ecu is in diagnostic mode. Your MIL might be unpluged or out, when you put your key in the ignition turn it to run but do not start the car and see if the MIL lights up.

The MIL does work and I got Code 55 for no codes stored.
I just thought that the ECU still gave a LED confirmation since there is still a glass openning and I swear I can see the Green LED inside. I guess they just didn't include the LED blinks anymore with the '95 software.

Thanks everybody. It turns out that it was a faulty MAF. But the fans still comes on constantly. If anyone has any thoughts on this, Please let me know.

Check your coolant sensor. Go buy a $15 volt-meter and a $15 Chilton's manual and you'll be amazed at how easy it is to trouble shoot all your sensors. Goodluck.
