yea... same with my car when it's not well warmed up =( but u can try to clean ur TB, clean/oil ur filter if it's dirty... mods like cold air intake will help u have better shift, or u can get a S-AFC and control ur fuel ratio manually... etc...

How would changing an air filter/cleaning tb make your shifts smoother? Those two things would probably cause your car to idle more smoothly but...

nah, that will only improve acceleration, and like you said, idling.

Have someone do it or drain it from the plug and refill.

Short Version:
Remove the return line from the tranny, start the car, and the tranny oil will spout from that line. After removing a certain amount, like a gallon, put in the same amount of new oil that you removed. Continue process until you see the bright red oil coming out of the return line.

I have the same problem and very much would like to improve a smoother gear shift. Someone mentioned, by changing the tranny oil, it will not do the job.

I had a mazda with the same problem. I had my trans oil changed. It did not work.

Does anyone have experiences in solution this problem.

I flushed my transmission and refilled with Redline D4 ATF using the T-tech service at Jiffy Lube. Pretty expensive. $80 for the service and $100 for the fluid (self supplied).

However, my transmission shifts perfect right now. Still not Toyota smooth, but hey, its a Nissan, what can I expect.

To answer your question, no. The od uses a clamp of sorts it does not actually have gears or use reaction plates or clutches(in the conventional sense). You should not have to worry about your tranny if the od doesn't work. Eventually yes, right now no. Just don't try to use the od and when you feel one of the other gears slipping then take care of everything. If i'm wrong then someone please correct me, but your tranny will not go any faster because your od is slipping. It will have everything to do with your driving habits.

Just the opposite....the vb mod produces firmer quicker shifts. He's looking for softer more fluent shifts.

Fixed my problem

I had this problem on mine, the shift from 1st to 2nd was extremely rough. To the point where I would slow the car down when it shifted.

I did some work this weekend and the car is running better then new. We upgraded the battery grounding, to 4, and ran an extra grounding.

WOW, what a difference. When the car shifts now you don't even notice. When I am WOT, it is a smoother shift through all the gears even at high RPMs. My car drives like it should again.

Anyways, I know everyone is going to say that the grounding did not do anything, but the difference can be felt. I am not sure if it was just the disconnecting of the negative from the battery for about an hour or if the actual upgrade of the cable helped, but its amazing.

My little story.

Fixed mine too

Just to pass this along...
I had a tranny flush done in january, then shortly after i noticed harder shifts, especially from 1st>2nd, 2nd>3rd... took it in to get looked at and they said nothing was wrong, after reading this post i unhooked my battery for a few hours, hooked it back up and went for a nice long drive, and my tranny was back to shifting nice and smooth. might as well try it...

Changing the above along with changing dirty PCV valve and old plugs will improve performance and vaccuum, and therefore can make for smoother auto shifting. Try varying your throttle slightly during a shift and see what happens. The same thing is going on if your engine is not running right.

tampamax, you cant see my quote anymore but I found out your answer is right... my transmission wouldnt shift into O/D because of an automatic transmission temperature control sensor... thanks for answering my question
