Engine Question???

Hey everybody on the forums, I need to know something. My check engine light came on and I went to Nissan to see what was wrong with my 95 Maxima. They told me that my E.G.R. was clogged because of the fuel emissions and that I had a failing O2 sensor. I know that I can probably buy an O2 sensor for less than the $300 they told me, but I was wondering where the E.G.R. is located and if it's possible to clean it myself. To clean it out plus the new O2 sensor, its gonna run me close to $800.00 if I go through Nissan( ). So I figured I would ask to see if maybe i could clean it out myself and save a couple hundred dollars. If anyone can help, please do. I dont know if this will help any, but i have a 1995 Maxima GXE Auto. Thanks guys!

Buy a Chilton's manual for $20 and read on how to do it yourself....you can get the manual at just about any major book store or parts store.

Also, your O2 isn't always bad. Just because it threw a code, doesn't mean it's broken....it's telling you something.

Dealers love to do that to people.

It would be like buying all new Anti-Virus software for my computer because the Anti-Virus software I have in my computer now told me I had a virus.

The Chilton's manual has a full write-up on what to do....with steps and pictures.

Essentially, you take the EGR valve off, get a drill with a bit slightly smaller than the piping, and drill the carbon out of it.

You also should test the EGR yourself first, before you go into all of that work.

The book shows you how to test it too.
