Transmission seal help
Transmission seal help
This seal that is located on the rubber boot thats covering the rod, does it supposed to seat in at an angle? I noticed that I try to put it in straight and it will force the seal up against the rod and doesnt seal up correctly so the only way is to put it in at an odd angle which seems like it doesnt go in all the way. any help? does this seal hold in fluid? Tranny is off the car so I dont know if its leaking or not.
One more thing, the rod that goes in and out looks like its also at an angle but Im not shure if its bent or not since I can still shift all the gears. the rod is at an angle so that can be why the seal doesnt seal all the way.
pic is NOT my tranny but thats the seal im talking about

Well I belive all that is , is just the dust seal. You should be ok. Did you get hit or something. If you didnt or if you didnt run over something your rods shouldnt be bent.

I dont think its a dust seal since the new seal I bought says oil seal on the reciept and it looks like an oil seal looking at it. I dont know if the striking rod is bent or not so im taking it to the dealer to check out. If it is bent then I will need a new striking rod. The rod will shift all teh gears fine but It looks like it has a slight bend on it causing the seal to have a gap in it.

That is a seal yes. I seen it in my haynes manual. They used a hammer to tap it in I believe.
The seal should sit flat or flush . Tap it in with a wooden dowel (1/2" dia) and a hammer. Slowly tapping around the seal unitl it sits flat. It is an oil seal because I took my tranny out to replace the bearings. Damaged the seal a little when I reamoved it and now 1000 km after I reinstalled it, the seal is leaking. So when you put the tranny in be gentle with those seals. Good luck.

Nope.. your rod is most likly ok.. If it were bent you would not be able to shift to all gears... If you pulled the old seal you need to get a pipe the size of the outside ring of the seal that extends further then that rod.. then you can use a hammer to seat it..

ok, I went out and examined it again and I think my striking rod is serioulsy messed up. yea shure it shifts fine but the rod seems to be crooked at an angle a few degrees which wont allow the seal to fit properly.
