Muffler opinions

Hi,

I have a 1995 Maxima SE and have a Budget y-pipe and b-pipe with a resonator. I am using the stock muffler. The sound is really awesome with this setup - a nice low pitched deep tone. However the flaps inside the muffler are shot and it rattles inside the muffler when I rev. So now I am looking for a new muffler. I wouldn't mind getting another 95SE muffler but I was wondering if there are any other mufflers that I should consider. I am looking for something similar to the stock muffler because of the sound.

Thanks for any advice.

Are all the 2000 - present mufflers the same? I have heard a budget y-pipe, b-pipe (without resonator) with a 2000 muffler and it sounded very honda civic like. I definetly do not want that.

maybe it being without a resonator caused that sound. no idea because I never heard that setup before

Are all the 2000 - present mufflers the same? How are they different from the 95? ... and is the 95 - 99 mufflers all the same as well?

I think all the 5th gens are the same. they are different from 95-99 because they have a variable valve type deal inside that has something to do with maintaining optimal back pressure with a flapping door or something like that. I believe that the 95-99 are the same muffler but the piping is slightly different

If I have a 95 can I even use the variable valve type muffler? If I do use it, will I even benefit from it being variable valve or does the rest of my exhaust system have to be different in any way to make use of the variable valve muffler?

Those "rattles" you're hearing aren't loose baffles in the muffler. That's the mechancial sound of your VQ. Believe me, when you put on a lower restriction resonator or no resonator, that sound comes out. You can usually hear in neutral wrapping the throttle or sometimes in first when the exhaust piping is cool. It's something you'll have to live with.

Yes you are correct, I can hear it at those times and even when I shift when the car is revving high. When listening to it from the outside, the sound is completely isolated inside the muffler itself. Richie at Budget Exhaust said that it is the baffles in the muffler that are slapping each other because one of them might have broken off.

Hey speedemn! You must be referring to my set-up I called Jeff @Budget who said it would cost C$80 for a resonator (installed). The ricey sound is starting to get to me.

Now that it's warmer, I'm going to install my old '97 muffler back on to see how it sounds & affects my hp/tq. (But it's inlet pipe is only 2.25" dia. vs. the 2.5" dia. pipe that the 5th gen. muffler has been modified to.)

Nope I was referring to Eugene's car... but now that I think about it, you are in the same boat as him. ;-) Go back to Budget and I'd like to hear your car after you get the resonator on your b-pipe. Then I can isolate the cause of the rattle to the b-pipe. Dave B thinks that it is the sound of the VQ. But I don't think anyone else experiences this same rattle, with this setup.

You should hear my car now dude... sounds awesome (outside of the annoying rattling at certain times from the baffles in the muffler).

I use to think it was loose baffles also and I don't blame any shop for thinking the same thing........................................ but they're wrong. I use to have a Stillen B-pipe without the resonator teamed with my stock muffler. Once I put on the B-pipe, I got the rattling sound (believe, it's worse without any resonator). I immediately thought loose baffles. I figured it was no big deal since the muffler was 6 years old. I bought Mardigras 1998 OEM muffler as a replacement. I put it on and the same exact sound came through Eventually I got rid of the B-pipe and went back to stock. The sound disappeared. I'm now running the stock B-pipe and a 2001 muffler. I did notice a very tiny bit of the rattling sound came back once I put on the 2001 muffler. I guess the 2001 muffler is slightly less restrictive, as we all hoped.

I totally take your word for it, but the only thing that makes be think otherwise is that, why isn't everyone with a gen 4 and y-pipe/b-pipe complaining about the same sound? My case is the first time that I encountered it.

I wonder if I can just take "A muffler" from anywhere and bolt it on and see if the sound goes away... before I invest money in another one.

Now that I think about it, I do recall him saying it was really loud.

I'm aiming for mid-May. I'd love to hear how yours sounds.
