I have a 97 Maxima auto GLE. It has a O/D doesn't it really matter if it is on or off???

yes it matters. i would read the owners manual if you have one. if not, o/d when off allows you lock out all gears past 3rd. its good if youre cruising on the highway and you want a little more pull. i keep it off in traffic to keep the tranny from searching for gears. if i were you, i would just leave it on meaning the indicator light is off.
