OK, I went to the shop again today, and the guy told me that b/c of the 10,000$ fine he cannot even make me a test pipe (unless it was after hours, cash, and no receipt) - he looked at my car though, a '95 and saw the 2 o2 sensors and said it wouldnt work b/c it would trip the computer and said it would then make it perform TERRIBLY b/c the computer would realize something was messed! Is this true?

The 2nd thing he suggested.. was to remove the cat, put on a 3" in, 3" out hi-flow cat and then run 2.25" all the way back, put a flowmaster on b/c he has a 2chamber one, used but perfect, for 25$ he would do and then put a new tip. He said to do everything, from the cat back, 290$ installed... what do you all think? Thanks for any help, suggestions, etc

Why not just buy the Cattman or Stillen unit? They are both 300+ but they have the holes for the O2 sensors and the car won't run funny....it will run faster

are you talking about the ypipe?

I am looking for everything after the ypipe as I probably will be purchasing the Y too - there are huge gains to be gotten by all the other stuff besides just the Y (especially the cat I have been told)

I suggest gettin the stillen or cattman y-pipe and then having a custom 2.25 pipe installed from there back. the y has the holes for the sensors.
I have a dynoflow or some such muffler on mine and the custom cat back and it cost me $250. One of my friends put a flowmaster on his max and it didn't sound so hot. Loud but weird.

you will have to spend more to do it this way, but hey, nuthins too good for your baby, right?

if the guy can make a ypipe for cheaper

would it not be as good I assume, would it just be similar to stock or something? the guy there is a real believer in changing the cat on back, not the ypipe.... should I tell him shove it Im getting a y anyways?

I have a test pipe. I have 3 oxygen sensors. 2 on the y pipe and one just after the cat. My check engine light goes of every now and then. I carry a small screw driver in my car. I can reset the light in under a 50 seconds. Its not that big of a deal. He should charge you no more than $30 for the pipe.

i don't know if i'd trust a y-pipe from joe blow
its a little more complex than the cat back one, and yes it will make a big difference.
so will a cold air intake.
in fact just the muffler system without the improved intake doesn't seem to help that much.

Keep in mind that the Cattman and Stillen pipes are made especially for the car and tested, whereas this guy at Midas (or wherever) probably hasn't worked on a Max before. For the extra money, you're buying peace of mind and a whole bunch of people who can testify to the part's success. Basically, if you're gonna do something, do it right.

My engine light hasn't gone on b/c he just drilled a hole in the glass pack that he put in place of the cat and stuck the O2 sensor in there. Get the y-pipe and the r/t cat. I have also heard a Maxima w/ a Magnaflow....sounded very nice. Look for a used y-pipe. Shouldn't be that expensive. Look @ my sig....just what u want.....and a y-pipe.

Here's my take->

On a 95, using a test pipe. The check engine light will come on. Why? the O2 sensor thinks the cat is bad. Which it's, because it's not there anymore. The last O2 sensor does not affect the operation of the car. It's just annoying having the check engine light on.

About getting a 3" high flow cat and custom 2.25" cat back with magnaflow. First, I don't think it will be mandrel bent or stainless steel, so $290 is just ok price.

If I was you, I would get a Carsound cat that Warpspeed guys are selling and Apexi catback. Total cost: ~$550.

He's right about changing out the CAT. Even more so with the rear pipe (mine was crimped bad over 50%). It'll really help the y-pipe breathe.

I'm running the 2.25" RT CAT, and the 2.25" SS Courtesy b-pipe right now. My shop extended both ends of the CAT to get rid of the curvepipe after the CAT. Bunged the rear O2 sensor right into that piece.

Gobs of power and noise. No MIL light problems at all. Don't think the stock muffler's up to the task though. Backpressure changes at various RPMS

I paid $125 for my 2.5" cat back piping. I already purchased the resonator and the muffler. I'd say that price is not that good. You can get the brand new Apexi catback for little more $$$.
