For those who do not want to buy a whole role of cellophane:
I bought a cellophane party bag (dark violet) for $.10 at Roberts Crafts. They had other colors as well. The red (darker red) made the clock red, the violet made the clock indiglo blue-->just what I was looking for. In all, I spent $.12 -- I think I got you all beat!
I also cut the pink/blue wire to disconnect the dimmer. I like it better having my clock brighter indiglo all the time.

There is a way, but it most likely involves removing the entire unit from the carriage. Also, I think you have to cut through some glue. I looked at doing it yesterday, but I did not have the time to dissassemble the entire stereo to see how the cover was attached.

Can you tell there is celephone over the clock in the daytime?
How did you get around the hour/minute buttons that are used to set the clock?
Did your dash go back together flush or is there some gap now?

MINE TURNED OUT SWEET AS HONEY!
You can absolutely NOT detect any cellophane on mine, at any time--day or night. Indiglo blue, through and through. I removed the entire vents with the clock (those vents were dirty, needed to be cleaned!) and added some foam around the back of the vents to lessen the air escaping into the console from the blower. I tightened screws and bolstered the fittings so that my vents would snap in better than they were when I removed them (previous owner was careless). I was careful to align everything properly, and added some felt around all of the edges for a tighter fit (I had a tiny creak sound sometimes). You don't need to worry about getting around the buttons. You completely remove the clock, take off the cover, and cut the cellophane to just barely cover the entire LCD window. I then used electrical tape to tape it snugly to the rest of the unit, not interfering with the buttons at all.
Absolutely no gap in dash, looks better than ever. I also used some tape around the parts I took out to reduce any gaps that were previously existing.

I just paid to have them painted. The doorhandles are fine but the window trim started to chip in a few spots. I just ended up buying the black SE trim. I have yet to install it though. I'm famous for buying stuff and let it sit in my garage - lol.
I believe it is an LED display. You can buy 7-segment LEDs anywhere (http://www.eled.com/product.asp?cata...id=ESA56-11EWA). Color LCD displays require pixellation and RGB diffusion for each pixel, which our clocks clearly don't have (it would be a tremendous waste anyway). A basic non-color LCD just polarizes the light so that it is either absorbed by a certain area of the display (dark)or reflected (light) and may or may not be backlit.
7-segment LEDs have a separate LED in each segment which are wired in parallel with a common anode or cathode. As current passes through each LED segment, it is lit up by the bulb. The display in your bedside alarm clock is made of LEDs, whereas color displays like those on cell phones are LCDs.

I too am doing this mod, however, I've removed the clock from the dash, but can't get the plastic cover, covering the lcd to come off. The two hooks on the sides of the unit seem to not want to come off. Anyone have this prob? I mean, im pretty sure this plastic piece comes off, and there is a little lcd screen in there? i've tried everything to get this plastic case off but it's not coming? i don't just put the cellophane over the plastic do I? confused..
