reverse/neutral light switch
reverse/neutral light switch
My car failed NJ inspection for rear light 'wig wag' - when hitting the brakes, the reverse lights go on and one brake light goes out (when compared to having the tail lights on). When I had the alternator replaced a few months ago, the dealership told me that I needed a new reverse light switch and an axle seal. Thanks to various posts I found here (using the search feature, [sigh]) I learned about the axle seal/differential bearing problems with 4th gen manual trannys and have simply checked my fluid level from time to time rather than fall for the dealership axle seal hoax, thanks!
Anyhow, now that I know what the reverse/neutral switch does and that I need to replace it within the next 3 weeks (for reinspection), my question is the following: Where is it??? The local auto parts store listed the part at $18 and the dealership wants $200 to replace it (ouch!). The Haynes manual doesn't mention this at all except in the wiring diagrams.
If at all possible I'd like to replace this myself (I'm guessing it's located on/near the tranny) without having to buy the factory service manual. Any thoughts, comments, or incredibly useful insights out there?
