Spark plug problem 99 GXE auto- HELP!!!!
I installed new plugs in 5 of the six cylinders in my Max. After trying in vain to get the 5th cylinder spark plug out, I found it was stuck in the cylinder and the hex nut on the spark plug (the 5/8" socket nut which allows you to remove it with a rachet) seems to have melted or otherwise disappeared. In other words, the plug is round where it should be a socket. I haven't the slightest how to remove it, what tool would be required, or how much it would cost to replace.
Anything?

Sounds like the nut is stripped. I remember a poster here who actually broke off the plug in the cylinder. There was a long thread about how to possibly remove it including dismantling the engine. he never did post back to let everyone how it was removed. You may have to leave this one up to the mechanics. Anyone have ideas?
Brutal. Maybe put some glue on the inside of the spark plug socket and wait for it to dry while it's on the plug? See if the glue or epoxy or whatever will hold tight enough so that the force req. to remove the plug won't break it loose.
You'll probably have to buy another socket but at least you'll have the plug out.

the maxima is Japanese
all nuts and bolts on the maxima are metric
if its a socket in there, put the attachment back in the hole and loosen the spark plugs.

Is the boot from the coil stalk stuck on the plug which is not allowing the socket to grab the hex? Check the coil you pulled out of that cylinder and make sure the rubber boot is on the end.
If not, there's an easy way to get it off the plug and back onto the coil pack's stalk. Read the FAQ's.

The boot isn't stuck on the plug itself. The nut, however, is almost definitely stripped. The best suggestion thus far parallels one I was thinking of myself- applying an epoxy to the plug itself and the socket to remove the bad plug.

Good luck!

I think Sears now sells a special attatchment that is made to drill out stripped and broken off nuts and bolts. You would have to actually break off the plug though and risk making it worse. But that could be your last alternative...
I used a standard sized sparkplug socket to take mine out.. It worked. I dono!
