Suspension noise
Suspension noise
My '95 GLE (75K miles) has started to make a curious noise when I make a turn or go over a bump. It sounds like whoomfh - if that makes any sense, or like a large piece of rubber rubbing against metal. The noise is not coming from the tires, but somewhere from the rear suspension. Before I get a song and dance from my dealer (you need to replace this, that, and the other) I wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue.
Thanks,
Micheal

I've seen the dust covers get so messed up and ripped apart that pieces of it got jammed into a ball and lodged itself against the shock piston. Every time the shock moves it rubbed this wad of rubber up and down along the piston shaft.
Jack up you car, take the rear wheels off and look closely at your rear shocks. If there's something all ripped up, torn apart and wedged between the spring and the shock, you've found your problem. You can see the whole assembly just by removing the wheel. It's pretty straight forward. It could also be the shock itself thats making the noise. How's the car ride? Does the rear jump around a lot or does it still feel nice and tight?

I am waiting for a decent (warm) day (June!) in Chicago to jack up the car and do the inspection as you sugested. I took the car out for a extended test drive last night fast/slow, rough roads, hard turns, etc - and wouldn't you know I could not get the car to make the noise. The car's suspension doesn't have any issues - it is tight. I think my best bet is to get the visual inspection done.
Thanks for the tip.
