I had the same problem. It got worse and then the clock failed altogether. I found a thread back in the beginning of April. I found that the connector block on the clock board was loose, resolder it and fixed my clock...

have you disconnected the battery recently? sometimes when you hook it up again the computer gets messed up i forget the correct way to fix this. it happed on my 3rd generation a few times never had it happen on my 96 so im not sure if this could be your problem

It's the start of the problem. The clock momentarily loses power due a failing solder joint and resets the clock. Mine went for a while like that, then started to be intermittent on / off, then finally remained off. The solder joints (typically on the 4 pin power block) fail over time. The temperature will affect it also as the metal contacts expand and contract.
