Nope, the slider gear for reverse had some issues already. The top of teeth on the inside of the gear were mushroomed and it stuck in reverse. It then decided that it was done spinning at all and tore the teeth off of it completly on the outside and decided to take some more with it. Sucked too as I was on a first date with a girl. I couldn't scream and hollar or anything!

Redline is great stiff. I was just ****ed that I put that much $$$ into fliud and it blew that quickly. That's all.

hahaha i didn't know there were so many people in my kind of a situation. Well first of all, REDLINE kept my tranny goin... then when I had the regular **** that nissan put back in at my 120k mile maintenance, all hell broke loose in my transmission. Eventually, at 135k my bearings went bad, and at 150k now needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

I am going to get myself redline, thanks for the code.

How often do you change redline?

Has anyone used any of the redline shockproof stuff? Does anyone know anything about it? I am buying a vlsd tranny as well. is this gonna change which type of redline i will be able to use? There are like three different types:

1. Manual Transmission Lubricant - a 75W90 GL-4 gear oil designed for use in manual transmissions and transaxles. Provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting.

2. Shockproof: A solid synthetic shock absorbing agent suspended in a light viscosity polyol-ester based synthetic gear oil allows outstanding levels of gear protection in a comparatively light weight gear oil. This product will free up so much horsepower, it's almost like cheating! Widely used in all racing forms, and the Heavy is recommended for street cars that are no longer under warranty. Shockproof Gear Oil has a 40% lower coefficient of friction and 250% greater the load carrying capacity than conventional gear oils. Temperature reductions of 25-75 degrees F are commonly observed.

They describe the shockproof as pouring like antifreeze and protecting like 75w90. suggested for class racers and qualifying.

3. They have a 75w90 gear oil-is it the same thing? It is described as For most street driven differentials. Excellent performance in conventional and limited-slip units. Also for limited-slip manual transaxels which require a 90 WT oil. Contains limited-slip friction modifiers.

Thanks

Mike

MTL is the 75W-80 GL4 gear oil, MT-90 is the 75W-90 GL4 gear oil. You want the MT-90. The "other" 75W-90 and the shockproof gear oil are GL5 formulations that aren't buffered for use in a GL4 tranny, which all of the Maxima's have whether it's a VLSD or not. If you use these gear oils you will create tons of problems with the softer metals in the transmission.

The gear oil I would recommend from Amsoil is the Series 2000 75W-90. I now use it exclusively in all my own vehicles. Both Redline and Amsoil are top notch products. Which is better depends on where your priorities lay. For maximum performance and the best cold weather shifting, Redline has a slight edge. For the best overall wear protection with an improvement in cold weather shifting over the stock fluid, Amsoil has the edge.

Interesting. I tend to think I'd be a little more bummed about the several-hundred-dollar transmission than the $45 worth of fluid.

How much longevity difference is there between the two? What makes for the differences? weight? additives?

The drain intervals can be similar, though I would be more comfortable using Amsoil for a longer interval than Redline. Both the oils are 75W-90's which is the recommended weight. The differences between the two boil down to the different company philosophies. Redline is geared towards maximum performance at any cost, while Amsoil is more geared towards maximum wear protection. As a result, the basestocks of the 2 brands and the additive chemistry blended into them are different between the brands.

Didn't say that I wasn't , but this thread was about the gear lube, not my blown tranny, so I was saying that I was upset after spending that much on fluid and then having the tranny let go again. It was an added expense that made it that much worse.
