Re: Rotors Seized On - what is size of that small screw to push rotors out?

Was doing a routine brake job and changing out my rotors with a couple of .org memebers.

The front rotors refused to come off. We tried hammering the rotors off but it did not budge. We also rotated the rotors and banged it in from the back and front to rock it. Did not work.

Any suggestions? I have yet to try forcing a screw thru the two holes to push the rotors out. Anyone know the size of the screw I need?

Thanks,

I don't know what the size is...

When I did mine, I just found a bolt that fit.

As for getting them off.

I sat on the ground, turning that screw about half a turn at a time and wailing on the rotor all the way around with a rubber mallet for about five - ten solid minutes before mine came off. When they did come off, they "popped" as if relieved of stress.

It was the same for both my fronts.

If it makes you feel any better, at least you don't have to remove the hub to change them...

Thanks Entropy.

I will be walking into Home Depot with my new rotor in hand and find some screws.

Crappy thing is that I was using a metal hammer thinking I would toss the old rotor...when it did not come off, looks like I made a pseudo sloted rotor myself. Actually, brakes seem to grab a bit more...rotors were not even warped after hitting them.

Home depot wont carry them. However, remove the upper bolt thats 14 mm thats on the motor mount near the belts and use that to push it out. I think its a M12x1.25 or M10x1.25.

Thanks for the suggestion. Can you give me some direction in which bolt this is? I have not clue where the motor mount is.

Thanks.

M10 means Metric 10mm right? So is 1.25 the thread pitch? If so, what is its unit?

Thx.

you probably know this, but just fyi, when you put the new rotors on, throw a little anti-sieze grease on the hub where the back of the rotor touches metal-to-metal and the studs potrude from. it'll prevent this from happening again.

The car was bought second hand and it looks like the original rotors. I may just head to Nissan and see if they would sell/give me one of those bolts...actually two of them so I can take them off evenly.

Felix...you are lucky yours just fell off when you loosend your tourque converter.

I don't know what the numbers mean exactly, but they are metric, if that helps. I just went to the parts store, showed 'em that number, and they gave me the bolt

Good idea about going to a local Nissan. My Max was bought 2nd hand too. I guess I just got lucky. btw, I think you meant torque "members" rather than "converter". I think the latter is related to auto trannies somehow (don't ask me how though!)

Thanks Felix,

I think it is good for me to keep some of these screws handy once I get my hands on them for other .org members in the area.

Anyway, I kinda do not want to take them out of my motor mounts as I may screw them up.

felix, let me know when you get the piston turny thingy also.

Thanks,

You should get some friends with DSMs. They have spare bolts laying around everywhere because they are always replacing stuff or taking it apart.

I found that bolt in my buddy's bucket o' spares... seems like pretty much every DSM owner is like that.

I don't remember how that saying goes, but they have one that goes simething like: "DSM, making better gearheads since 1989." (I probably totally slaughtered that - but you get the point).

Thanks guys,

UPDATE: WEnt to Nissan Dealership and for $2.00 cdn they gave me two of those screws. Well, 10 min of banging did not take off the rotors but these two screws did it in like 1 -2 min. Should have trusted the Haynes manual.
