The other day I was painting my calipers and my jack broke and my car fell and the rotor & axle hit the concrete. It made a small hole in the concrete. Now when I drive I hear a clanking sound. Has this ever happened to any of you? What part was actually damaged?

maybe the brake dust shield on the back of the caliper? it could be rubbing

The dust shield for the rotor could be hitting... that should have been obvious.

You could have damaged your axle, which sounds likely.

At the least, you probably put a nice flat spot in your wheel bearings. You could have bent your lower control arm...

I would take it somewhere (alignment shop) and have them look at it. Even if it is only your dust shield... plan on changing your wheel bearings soon and if your axle is not messed up now, I am sure it didn't help it's longevity.

That truly sucks man... hope it works out to be something minor.

Why the hell didn't you have a jackstand under there? Your damn lucky you weren't sitting there with your head or any other part of you under the car. Nobody should ever be under the car without proper supports in place and a jack alone does not qualify.

CV joint busted or control arm bent or any number of things.

Have to agree... you really should always use jackstands, and even then you should be weary. If anything, you can make jackstands that are sturdier than store boughts for cheap-cheap, and it isn't hard if you can run a welder.

Uh, is the jack still under there?

Jack it back up and rotate the wheel to see what's making the noise. Most likely the backing plate.

Sorry to hear that bro. If it was the factory jack that broke on you then you'll already know that it's an absolute liability and should basically not be used if you can possibly avoid it. Mine fell over a year back, but I was lucky; it went before I'd removed the wheel. My first store-bought tools for the max were a floor jack and a a couple of sturdy jackstands.

well I have good news. The only thing wrong was the metal thing around the rotor was pushed against the rotor.

Use the money you saved in repairs and buy a floor jack and jackstands.

Good thing, you where not under the car.....But when i put my car up....i always have three supports the floor jack and the jackstands....And even before i take off anything, i give the car a few nudges to make sure the car is sitting on the jackstands and floorjack corectly. That makes sure that if the car falls when i push it...it will fall on its wheels rather than on the rotor. Oh yeah always have chokes (wheel wedges)...so the car doesn't move back or forward depending where you jack the car up.

Last year a guy from another car forum I go to....was killed when his jackstand gave way and fell on him. He didn't die instantly....the car fell on his chest and suffucated him.

Within the last week, a guy in our neighborhod was killed while workng under his car. The car rolled off the jack while he was underneath. His daughters found him when they came home from school. Like XMAX suggested, always use jack stands, floor jack, and block the wheels on both sides. Safety first when working under a car, anything can happen.

At the very least, shove the wheel you're not using behind the wheelwell under the car. This saved my friend's life when his Impala fell off the jackstands.

good to hear your max is going to be ok.. also look into getting a hydraulic jack.. those things are better than the puny stocker, and not much $$
