0-60 technique

My car has been down on power recently so I used a whole can of TB cleaner into the running engine to try and clean some of that crap out.

Before i did this I was getting 9.5s 0-60, which for a stock '96 Se 5spd is absolutely TERRIBLE.

After the TB cleaner and giving it a chance to air out, the best I can get (measured by myself with a stopwatch) is 7.1s

To launch I hold the car at 3500rpm then dump the clutch - as the engine hits 4k I'm flat ont he floor with the gas. Switch up at 5500 (I change gears very quickly, and 5500 puts me in 2nd at 4k which is perfect) and then up to 3rd at 5500 again. If I hold out in 2nd to 60 then the engine runs out of breath and gets me to 60 in 8.5 instead of 7.1

What am I doing wrong? I'm supposed to be able to get 6.7? I figure my gearchange points are about right, no?

how did you empty an entire can of TB into the engine??? did you take out the stock intake and just sprayed it through the open unfiltered throttle body???

stop watch, im guessing he turns it on right as he touches the accelerator and stops it right when his needle gets to 60mph...

A stopwatch in the hand is so unreliable, you might as well just count off in your head.

You need some kind of electronic instrument (Gtech) to get any readings worth discussing.

Re: 0-60 technique

Your problem is your shift points. Shifting at 5500rpm means you hit 60 in 3rd gear. You should hold 2nd gear till 60. Also without knowing your 60ft times it is hard to tell. If you were able to goto the drag strip we could easily figure out what your 0-60 would be. I recommend timing your acceleration from 20-60 or 30-60mph, because that would be more accurate. According to cartest the car is 7 tenths slower from 20-60mph shifting at 5500rpm vs optimal (6500, 6200). Cartest also shows a 0-60 of 7.2 sec by shifting at 5500rpm vs 6.6 sec by shifting optimally. The only way you'd get a 6.7 sec 0-60 is with a 60ft ET that is lower than 2.32 and by shifting 1-2 at 6500rpm while holding 2nd gear.

a stop watch is very un-accurate.

speaking of 0-60 , does any body in the ct area have a g-tech i could test my time with?

To spray the TB cleaner I took the air cleaner and MAF off, propped open the butterfly so te engine was running about 2k rpm (running very lean because of the open vacuum lines and no MAF. Spraying the TB cleaner at the butterfly slowly so it didn't pool - it actually made the engine run faster because it wasn't as lean when burning the TB cleaner.

As far as the shift point - holding out to 60 in second slowed me down some - I just ran out of breath before getting to 6500... I need to get a dyno plot and see where the power is. i also need to clean my K&N - it's been 50k.

spraying it into the TB while the engine is hot and running has been discussed here and the overall consensus, assuming NJmaxseltd is the overall is that this is good to do. The TB cleaner is designed to be sprayed into the car while running, but normally we cant do that because we have fuel injectors and MAF sensors and what ever else the reason is.

i got a 7.3 on the g-tech for 0-60
only thing is i had 3 passengers plus myself
passengers were a total of 550lbs

why shift at 5500?
take first to redline, so that you won't hit a dead spot in second, and just hold it in second to get a good 0-60

if i didn't have have the passengers in my car, im sure i would have got low to mid 6's.

just to add, you're revving way to high at launch
try 1500, and press the gas as you come of the clutch (feathering it)
you should be hitting 6's for sure.

according to G-tech. there is no way you are doing a 6.7 with an Auto and only intake. that is all.
