Does a throttle position sensor ever go bad without getting a code? What are the symptoms of a bad TPS?

If you have a stick, you will notice that engine power will fluctuate wildly when you step on the gas pedal. It makes driveability a real bear. Its kind of like the car is just going nuts. In neutral, you may not notice a problem, but when you put the engine under load, the car will drive really poorly in terms of power delivery. I don't know about an automatic, but I would think nearly the same deal.
