Hello Fello Maxima Owners, Just joined the board. I have a question to ask. At how many miles should you start worrying about changing your timing belt? Mine has just turned over 80,000. Is this a hard task to perform on your own? I haven't bought a shop manual yet. Any input would be appreciated.

I hope you are joking. Maximas use timing chain. No internal belts on Maximas. Enjoy the ride.

Just be thankful its not a '94 or older. They used TWO timing BELTS on the DOHC engines. Nissan got smart and uses chains now.

From what I've been told 95+ Maxima's have a timing chain..No need to replace it unless its making some wierd noise...Fernando

The factory service manual only tells of checking the chain for worn rollers or links. If you break into the motor to check this you might as well change them. I say them because there are three chains. One big one and two little ones for the camshafts.

Your posting did not specify the year of your Maxima. This forum is devoted to the 4th generation Maxima, the '95 through '99 models. If yours is a 4Gen model, you have a timing chain rather than a timing belt. The chain should be replaced only if it becomes loose and noisy. This rarely happens, even on high-mileage Maximas.

... I haven't bought a shop manual yet. Any input would be appreciated.
For most home mechanics the Haynes repair manual is the best choice.
