loud engine?

it seems to me that my engine may be a bit loud, this may be my imagination since my last cars engine sounded like that of a plane, so i expected this one to be "silent." The car has 108k on it and I have no idea how the previous owned treated it. It is possible that he didn't use 91 or higher grade octane, synthetic oil, or warmed it up? would those factors contribute to it being a bit loud? Also, by me doing these things would it quiet it down? Also, are there any additivies (prolong, etc) that would help? My last question is does this show any kind of problems with it, or it's normal for it to be a bit "louder" than usual. My friend had an automatic as far as i remember, his was a bit quieter.

Thanks in advnace for any advice

Be a bit more specific in the sounds you are hearing. If you have any kind of intake, your engine noise will increase dramatically. Another thing to check is whether all your intake tubing is properly connected. If something has come apart or is missing, that will increase your intake noise. If it sounds like mechanical noise from the engine itself, well, it could be a bit worn. It probably won't hurt it any to leave it alone, especially since a mechanic would love to charge a lot to get his hands greasy, and still not corretly fix the problem.
