Trust the dealership?

According to the service write at my local dealership: "The 0304 knock sensor code is set any time it detects any knock."

He's also the same guy who told me the engine mount needs to be removed to replace the drivebelt, but I thought it could just be accessed by removing the wheel well shroud?

Hmmm. I dropped my car off at 9am. They close in a couple of hours. Just called; "They haven't figured it out yet" (the diagnosis of the hesitation). That probably means they haven't touched the car yet!

( They ain't getting paid if they don't come up with a diagnosis. )

He's almost 100% correct. Thats why it doesn't turn your check engine light on either. This is documented in the Nissan FSM as well.

0304 does not always mean you have a bad knock sensor, it means the signal from the sensor is out of it's acceptable range.

Even if it's not bad, the ecu will put the engine in safe mode and your pickup will s*ck.

I've never heard any pinging or detonation from the engine. Even at full throttle up a hill.

My OBD-II scanner spat out code P0325, for which it displayed the description as "Knock sensor or circuit malfunction" Haynes equates p0325 as 0304.

Was it only that code and did you get a check engine light?
How many miles on the car?

That was the only code I got. No CEL.

Just got a call from the dealership. The cannot reproduce the problem. Car checks out 100%. They had different people drive it in different situations with the computer logging and they didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

He also said they pull 0304/P0325 out of nearly every maxima that drives in...

His recommendations are to swap out the plugs (about 15k old) and "Quit using BP gas - use Shell for 4 or 5 tanks and see if it improves."

Well, I feel a tiny bit of vindication in that I was unablew to diagnose this prob, and apparently so are they. they say it drives perfectly - "must be an intermittent thing." I'll get Amy in the car with me and see if she feels the surge/hesitation or if I'm overly sensitive to what is probably just flat spots in the power curve. Damn, if I did a dyno run at 1/2 throttle I betcha it would show up as a nasty power curve... But I just lost $80 through my *** for a diagnosis of nothing wrong... Do I wanna do that again?
