I was just wondering the top speed that you all have reached in your maximas, let me know, oh and don't forget to say if you have a 5-speed or an Auto, I got my 1996 SE 5-speed to about 160 the needle on the speedo was pointing at the p in mph so everyone join in the fun and let's see who has gone the fastest

 

My '99 GXE 5-speed has never gone faster than 75 mph. I'm a wuss!

Your maxima will NOT go 160 mph on a straight level road. Sorry. Do a search. You would be the fastest maxima out there if you did.

 

I'll get to the end of the tread by saying that all of the SE 5 speeds will say about 142, and about half of the auto people will say 118 and the other half about 138. Then someone will say that there is a limiter in all of the GXEs and GLEs (there isn't in ALL of them) and that 118 is a fast as you can go in an auto, and this will continue for like another two pages and then the thread will die without the answer ever coming up. So lets just all say fast enough to get arrested on the spot. And unless you were reading the KPH numbers, your Maxima CANNOT DO 160 unless you bought new tires and rims and you didn't match up the sizes so that they leave your speedo reasonably accurate.

 

is very possible and I have witnesses, anyway I said about 160 or so I have no idea really how fast it was but you put two and two together if the needle was at the p is mph on a 1996 speedo, and it only registers 140, I don't know you tell me how fast the p would be

 

Does the car have any special sauce like a supercharger? Other than that or one hell of an ECU upgrade I can't figure out how you did that, and I doubt anyone else on the board has done it either with their Maxs. I'm not saying its not possible, but HIGHLY unlikely with anything in the neighborhood of 200 HP and normal gearing.

Autos are wierd. I have a 99 gxe aoutomatic right now and my top speed so far is about 132-134mph. In my old 96 gxe 5 speed my top speed was only about 128mph. Both of my Gxe's have come with the security and convienice package.

I won't lie and say it wasn't down a hill on the interstate. if you live in Knoxville TN or anywhere areound that area it was on pellissippi parkway

 

your maxima must not have the same drag co-efficient because you would need alot of road to go that fast...

have a witness ? did a cop clock you at 160 ?

Since my 18's have much more rotational mass or whatever accel ain't as good as 15's but top speed is much better and its accurate at about 140ish, i would be honest and say 137, but i have seen it past 140 at times, (like once) scared the **** out of me so i slowed down.

 

I went upto 132 on highway with auto GXE (little down hill).. Wish I can go upto 160.. hehe.. And by the way, not all the GXE has limiter.. ahem..

 

With my 95GXE 5spd It would accelarate hard until hitting the 118mph limiter.
With my new 99SE 5spd I hit 128mph three times with four people in the car, always run out of space. Maybe going downhill I might break the 130 barrier.

I've seen an indicated 140. Don't forget that speedometers are less accurate after 100 mph. At 140 my rpm's are right around 6g's and as you know the peak power of our engine is 5600 rpm's, so I don't think you're going to go much faster than that.
Now I'd like to get my hands on a 5th gen with the 6400 rpm hp peak!

over 140. then the inner fender well peeled off hitting my tire. had to replace that LOL. We almost crapped when it happened thinking that it was something with our sc.

 

I did about 140 on my maxima 1996 SE stick shift.. and there is not way in hell. u could do.. 160 in ur maxima.. unless u have nos in it.. u better check ur guages and make sure.. u read it right...

 

I agree that 160mph is impossible for a stock maxima, regardless of the hill. Besides, the engine would be at like 6600rpm, i.e. INTO the redline. It has no power up there, even if the hill was steep.

Anyway, I've pegged 140 on the speedo twice.

 

140+ mph as I passed a turbo eclipse. I felt like there was more left.

ive hit 135 ... dont have too many straightaways without cops around down in OC... i hit it going to LA at like 4am in the mornin, near the ikea @ carson city/110 freeway.

(relatively flat/straight) .. just fear cops.

 

cuz i hit 161mph....so HA!

The car in front of me was a CLK 430 coupe...we were doing 80-85 from the GWB ( george Washington Bridge) all the way to Sparta... Only saw one cop... and it was at the right time, UP hill ... the maxima held the road very well for that amount of time. 25 minutes straight... we hit 115 on a straight... had a client in the car who looked at me as we went passed 100, so i backed off when he really looked at me and grabed the door at 115...Ooops.. will not try anything faster till spring and tire upgrade...

There's no way to get a maxima that fast, even with a SC. Top speed stock is 135-140. You can get 150 with a lot of mods. No way 160. What are your mods?

kind of OT, but my last boss had a V8 grand cherokee, and when you go much over 100mph, the computer gets all messed up and reads something like 110 mpg

 

125 is the fastest ive gone i ran out of road
is it just me or do maximas accelerate really slowly after like about 115 it climbs soooooo slow like an eternity to get up to 125
is there something wrong with my max or is that the norm

 

I have a '97 SE 5-speed and I have been around 138-140 a couple of times. To achieve 160 MPH you would have to go WAY over redline in 5th gear and that just isn't physically possible. My car is at right around 6k on the tach at 140, so don't even dream about touching 160 without new gears, and a good bit more HP

hehe, im cheating, just did it in my new audi**smile**S4!!! I couldn't believe how smooooth it was, and it still had more! Only been to about 120's in my max, but what can u expect from the slushbox?....160.....i call

 

Actually, I noticed that my Max accelerates to about 122mph and starts coasting from there, but I mean really, really slow. Probably why I haven't found enough space to get to 130mph. Maybe because its a 99. Has anyone been able to get a pretty stock 99 past 130mph?

It's quite visible without the zoom in too. Notice the shadow difference between the center dial of the speedo and the tacho.

Besides, who would actually focus long enough on their gauges while driving that fast to get a decent picture like that? Either way, you get my vote for the dumbass award.

 

I've done 130+ 95 SE 5 SPD I doubt the 160.
