It's a dust shield. I think the wheel hub has to come off first. Then you need to bang it off. It looks like it's force-fitted in place.

Hmmm, either my dust shield sucks, or my brakes get real dirty, cause my rims are ALWAYS dirty and dark =(

I think the dust shield is to reduce dust/mud/crap on the rear face of the rotors. When you refer to "brakes get real dirty", do you mean the inside face of the rotor (or calipers)?

well, not the rotor, just the brakes, but they have been like trhat for a while. Basically what I meant is that whatever it is, gets my rims dirty real fast.

Some performance brake pads dust up more than others. If there's a lot of construction around where you drive, that might have something to do with it too.

so when changin brakes, is it a better idea to leave the dust shield on? i think it looks kinda stupid, but if it serves a good purpose i might as well just leave it. also, if im changing my brake lines, do i completely replace all my brake fluid or jus replace what is lost? thanks.

I don't know all the pros/cons to removing the shield. If cooling is a big issue for you, removing the dust shield will allow the back side of the rotor to cool slightly quicker. But then again, if braking is particularly important to you, you'd be better off getting good pads.

No experience myself in flushing/bleeding brake lines. Here's what some other guys have recommended: quantity of fluid req'd Hope this helps ya.

Cut that shield off with sheet metal cutters. No need for it.
