Hitch
#2
Buy the hitch. I have a Hidden Hitch on the back of my '97 SE. I believe it was around $140. Install it yourself. It's easy, only like 6 or 8 bolts. No drilling. All you have to do is remove the two rear tow hooks, and the hitch bolts in where the tow hooks used to. The Hidden Hitch has a full width bar with a 1 1/4" reciever so you can use standard tongues and bike racks, etc...
Don't get the ones that require you to drill into the spare tire well, or the ones that use a flat draw bar.

Just like vmok said.
Reese makes direct bolt on hitch which they call hidden hitch.
It comes with instructions, everything is bolt on.
Autozone sells them for like $110.
If you want it installed it's going to be close to $200 at Uhaul.
The bolt on is really easy I did it in 1.5 hrs. including a bud break.

You're owners manual should list maximum towing capacities. Since you have an automatic, you might want to inquire about a tranny cooler and possibly flush the automatic transmission and replace the fluid with a synthetic type. You can get the cooler for about $50 and install it yourself if you're a DIY'er. Extra weight on the maxima's transmission, especially up hill, will strain it and the synthetic fluid and cooler (a radiator for the fluid) will ease the strain.
