Transmission Fluid Change

Transmission Fluid Change
Sorry if these are stupid questions, I don't know much, but I'm getting terrible mileage, about 16 city/highway.
To change Auto Transmission fluid Do I need to drain the old fluid out, and if so how? How much fluid do I need to put in?
It has been a while since it was changed. Also how do I replace the fuel filter?
Thanks for the help.

I'd reccomend taking it somewhere to get the fluid flushed. It's around $120

go to any auto store and get a fuel filter. as for the tranny oil, when you drang out the oil from the bottom by your self it will yield 4-5 quarts of tranny oil. that is not all of them, if you got the money, use it for a full flush. - $.02

The fuel filter is a metal cylinder that is clamped against the firewall, down and to the left of the brake master pump. It is connected by two hoses with flathead screw clamps. You must release these clamps, slide them down the hose to get them out of the way, then pry the hose off of each end of the filter. Some people recommend removing the fuse to the pump and killing the engine to drain the fuel from the system. I found that to be unnecessary, just work quickly. Pry both hoses (don't take them completely off yet) to the point that they are almost off. Remove the top one first (this reduces amount of fuel that will ultimately be lost) and put the new fuel filter (G4777 FRAM at Pepboys, AutoZone, or Checker) near the hoses. Remove the bottom hose and quickly replace the new filter, placing the correct OUT side pointing up towards the sky. Replace the top hose and screw clamps securely, not too tight or you will cut the hose (over time). A little fuel will spill/leak out in the process, but if you are quick it will be minimal.
Also, this would be a good time to replace an old air filter and your PCV valve. You sound like you have a bad front left 02 sensor as well. Check ECU for stored codes.

I completely agree with cam_honestiam and would add the following:
Get Nissan OEM parts, not a big diff and they are better.
As for the fuel filter, I remove the fuse and do a start or two. What I also do is: Loosen the clamps so that they move over the nipple. Then wait over night. This will de-pressurize and you won't bang up your hand pulling the hose off.
While that's doing it's thing. Change out the PCV valve. WD-40 the nipple and it'll go in nicely. Some think to clean, I'd just put a new one in. That way you know that its ok.
Tranny, drain and fill. You only replace ~4 quarts, but do this for the next couple of oil changes and your good to go. Also go synethic.
Change the oil at the same time. You'll already be under the car for the tranny.
And air filter.
So you see, you could do everything in the later afternoon. Come back in the morning and do the fuel filter in a jif.
