99 auto - engine stumbles when in drive with foot on brake

hey all --

my friend has a 99 SE-L auto with 65k miles on it. he's got this problem with the engine when the car is in drive, but he has his foot on the brake. the engine stumbles every 1-2 seconds, like as if there were a cylinder that didn't fire. this only happens when the load from the transmission is on the engine; when the car is in park or neutral, the engine idles smoothly.

we checked for engine codes, and he changed spark plugs and cleaned out the throttle body, but still no luck.

has anyone seen this problem before?? (i can't get search engine, disabled again?) and of course, how to fix.

any other ideas?

thanks all,

tommy

Start checking the coil packs. Mine started as a blurp at idle..I'm 5spd though..Then it would feel slow some days faster others. I suggest you check those with an ohm meter.

Try cleaning the IACV.

Could be a lazy or dirty fuel injector. Dump a bottle of Techron in the tank and see if it clears it up a bit.

As it says in the manual dont use fuel system cleaners. So I dont recommend running anything like that within the system.

I just fixed this problem on Friday. It drove me insanity for weeks until my mechanic found out the the ignition coil in my 4th cylinder was no good.

I idle real nice now!!

That would be my bet.

I been having that same problem for awhile now on my 98. I guess I have to check the packs because I have completed a major tune up which included a fuel injector cleaning, PCV valve, fuel filter and all the major things. I still get the occasional burp at idle and some days it seems faster the other. Alot due to the heat here in Central TX but it's worth me checking into. I just don't have the meter not wouldn't have a clue as to what to do with it if I did have one. I read up on it though. Got a major road trip this weekend, hope it doesn't cause a problem....

thanks all for your responses/suggestions...

wouldn't a bad coil pack show up when reading the engine computer?? i thought a bad coil pack would throw a code?

ok, i think we were going to change the fuel filter next (still gonna do it anyway), but i will tell him to check the coil packs...

ok, im going to search next on how to ohm out a coil pack, any one know offhand what to measure and what values?

thanks a lot. this forum is the best.

I have been having this problem for over a month,

the techs say there is nothing wrong w/ the coil packs, even though i get an error code when i accelerate hard occasionally.

i changed the plugs, still does it, i dont know what the hell it is, its p1ssing me off really bad. I sit at red lights and it shutters randomly, sometimes really bad, sometimes the rpms go up a bit ..

its really annoying, and nissan refuses to change the coil packs but they think its ok.

so i shouldnt put techron in my automatic 99 ?

I have this problem also and I put in a bottle of STP fuel system cleaner. Yes! I know the manuel says I shouldn't, but I did anyways....It solve the problem for a little while and I haven't had the problem since...

I still think that it will come back...what should I do then? check the ing coils? do a TB cleaning? I have 72k miles on my '99.
