Why can't I just get a K&N and slap it on?

Why can't I just get a K&N and slap it on?

So... why do I have to go out and spend $150+ on a Stillen, JWT popcharger, Frankencar, etc intake when I could just go out and get a K&N and slap it on? I mean... and I know I'm going to get crap for this but... I looked at the stock box, and it looks like... If you could get the right plate to adapt you could attach just about any filter to it. Yes/No?

And... hehe, keep in mind this is college student budget thinking here... I know those eBay CAIs are crap, but couldn't I just use the midpipe from it? or find one like it? What, other than shiny metal, makes the Frankencar midpipe more special than another similarly shaped midpipe? Am I wrong here?

Too bad search is down. Here you go:

http://www.brianv.net/mods/filter/

and you mind as well go all the way to get a full hybrid intake for an extra $15:

Enjoy.

The airbox itself is the restrictive part, not jsut the filter. Getting a stillen or jwt etc.. will give you more filter surface area which = freer flowing intake.

This is a kind of late response, so you may have already rigged up some kind of adaptor (sp) already... but in case you haven't, here's another way.

I know there was a thread a long time ago about the home depot adaptor, but I can't pull it up now. The gist of it is that you can get a generic 3" drain pipe adaptor with a square base, and drill holes in the base to line up with the holes in the MAF. A generic 3" inlet K&N cone filter will squeeze over the drain pipe hose, and the whole thing bolts to the MAF. The hose clamp that comes with the K&N will work just fine and clamp it down to the drain pipe, and you're pretty set.

If you're concerned about the thing moving around, just take some aluminum or sheet metal strap and bend it into a bracket, you can use the existing bolts and holes from the airbox.

Hope this helps some,

I got a $20 AutoZone filter and slapped it on. I used the "BrianV" method. If you drill out the rivets instead of just yanking, you wont bend the gold piece very much at all. I used some silicone to seal the gold piece to the MAF. I put a little K&N oil on the filter and away we go...

does that setup result in a noise increase??? Im guessing it does but very little or ... Since theres no midpipe just the stock resonator.

Yeah, it's just as loud as any other open intake.

I'm just curious, if you do this filter mod, is there any cutting or permanent change that would keep you from going back to the stock setup?

The EBay CAI's aren't crap they are better than the PR CAI's imho because they are much lighter and dissapate heat better because they are aluminum vs steel like the Place Racing.

The only thing that is crap is the filter on most of them but that is easily remedied and even with a very expensive filter they are still much cheaper the the PR version.

Plus you can use it in hybrid mode as well so you have the best of both worlds.
