Rear Main Seal leak

Has anyone had a rear main seal oil leak? I see a small amount of engine oil leaking where my manual tranmission connects to the engine. I had the seal replaced at the same time as my clutch, but now it is leaking again. Could something else be wrong? Would a stuck PCV valve cause this?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. But it is not the oil pressure switch. If I remember correctly, the oil pressure switch is close to the oil pan, and this leak is on the very edge of the transmission.

Search for ericdwong's old threads...I remember he talked about the rear main seal awhile back and how much of a pain it was. Of course, his whole car was pain to him, so you'll have to take everything he says with a grain of salt. Regardless, his information should help you.

I just did a rear main seal replacement, 1st off I want to say that replacing a rear main seal kicked the dog in the a sss that would be me. Under the rear main seal is another seal a rubber oil pan seal that looks like a half moon and it prices for about $17.00. That half moon seal also has to get replaced because it gets dry rotted, cracked and gets very stiff. It suppose to be soft to the touch. I
am most likely sure that that particular seal did not get replaced in your car and that seems to be the problem. If you have the receipt chech and see if they replaced that seal by not replacing that seal thats where your oil leak may be coming from

yea the half moon seal is important.
what really sucks is on the 3rd gen it takes 5 min to replace the rear main seal once the tranny is out. on 4th gen you have to drop the pan and everything....it sucks!

Matthel found a way around that and it worked like a champ
of course this happened after 15 times of fitting it on pulling it off and then more stuff came off leading me to the discovery. Total install time way over 2 hours and a tag team thing.

just a thought, are you sure it is an oil leak? i just replaced my clutch slave culinder and hose leading up to it. cost $60. there was a lot of 'sweat' around the tranny and i kept having to top off my clutch master cylinder with brake fluid. but i think it is all fixed now. i assume that you are dripping oil onto the ground? good luck with this tho.

and jay25, how did you get around dropping the pan?

Actually, no oil falls to the ground. It is just at the very bottom of the transmission. I figured that it wasn't leaking enough to actually drip.

I'm taking the car to the dealer tomorrow for them to take a look. The car is still under warranty from the clutch and original rear main seal replacement. I'll check the clutch fluid when I get home, and see if it is low. Thanks.

I check the oil leak again, and it appears to be engine oil and not clutch (brake) fluid. The oil is right where the transmission bolts to the engine. The clutch fluid level appears to be lower than before, but I haven't checked in a while.

Any other suggestions? I'm taking it in tomorrow.
