Wheels Spin in Rain

Everytime it rains and I try to accelerate, most of the times the car just stays there and the front wheels just start to spin (the spin causes the front part of the car to pull to the right since the road is curved) and then I have to let go of the gas pedal and push down on it slowly for the car to go. It only happens in the rain (just got the car about a month ago so I don't know about snow).

What's wrong with it? I just got my axles replaced, but it was doing this before that too. I know that my struts are bad (since my car comes down hard when I go over a big bump fast), but what can it be?

Overpowering torque is your answer. You'll get use to it. The first time I got to drive my max was in the rain, same exact thing. Nothing wrong with the car, just ease up a bit. I now have Goodyear Aquatred 3 tires, so no more of that and I can go fast without hyrdroplaning. :-)

Thanks for the quick reply but o well. I have to get new struts soon so the tires have to wait. I'm broke so I'll prolly be buying some cheap brand tires from PepBoys or Sears... I don't race so I don't need excellent tires =P

you say that now... give it a few months till the addiction kicks in fully.. then you'll be buying good tires

You think spin out in the rain is bad. I was driving on the highway yesterday and I stopped at a toll booth. When I started to move again, my RPM went up and the car didn't move. I freaked and instantly thought "clutch or flywheel!". I kept trying and I slowly got moving, and then everything was fine. Then I noticed something on the road, looked ahead, and saw a tour bus leaking oil out the back like crazy. There was a path of oil on the road and the bus kept changing lanes to pass trucks, so I had to change lanes to avoid the oil slick. It would have been pretty nasty to spin out from oil on the road while doing 80.

There is no addiction when you're broke =P I need a job... I'll get good tires next year, until then, I'll use whatever new ones my parents buy me

The new struts will probably cost about $350 installed from PepBoys (I'll see how much my dad's mechanic charges me) plus the new tires (in a few weeks) will probably be around $200-$250 installed so my parents will be paying about $550-$600 for the 2 things within a month... Can't ask them to pay $200 more for better tires =P My dad is the kind of person that thinks that 87 octane and 93 octane gases are the same so what makes you think he'll buy "better" tires =P And I just got new axles so they paid for that and they pay for my insurance for now =P Don't want to ask for more since I do nothing around the house =P

lol I don't think there was oil on the ground there because I was the only one that it happened to =P

You can try letting a little bit of air out of the front tires. If you have your tire pressure too high, you can lose traction because of it.

Aquatreds are good tires, they aren't that expensive. before you go get some crappy tires, go do some research and make the best buy for you. tirerack.com has the best prices.

Inexperienced driver? Try not pushing on the gas quite so far in the rain, and you'll keep traction no matter what tires you have. Works everytime.

Also keep in mind that the road is slickest when it first begins raining. Reason is that the rain mixes with the natural oil on the road (from the asphalt, cars, etc...), but hasn't had a chance to wash off. Ease on the gas and you'll be fine. Decrease cornering speed and increase braking distance, too.

I got all 4 of them at 31 so it's not that high.

I don't push on the gas pedal hard, I just press it normally (don't know how to explain that one) =P When it starts spinning then I have to push slooooooowly.

Since it has to do with tires and there's nothing mechanically wrong, I'll just wait until I get new tires. Since I'm going to get my suspension fixed, I was just thinking of other things that were wrong so I can get them fixed while I'm at it

Thanks for all the help everybody!

Like someone said before, go to www.tirerack.com and buy some decent tires. I got yokohama avs db's and they do the trick. They are not expensive either. Check it out.

The only way to fully fix this is to get a LSD. Believe it or not it's mainly one wheel that's spinning out. The reason this happens is because the 4th gen drive-shafts are not equal length from the differential. So under all conditions, one wheel is always getting more power than the other. Let the wheel go and try to accelerate. It'll pull to the same side every time even if the wheels are properly aligned. That's why we get that awful torque steer. They fixed this with the 5th gens though. No LSD (except for the AE, of course), but barely any torque steer due to the equal length shafts. So like the others said, your best bet is upgraded tires.

Just think about it this way. If you tires don't grip that well when you accelerate, just imagine how bad it will be when you're on the freeway going around a corner and your car starts to slide right into a wall. How much money is your life worth to you? Is it worth a good set of tires?

Grippier tires grip SO much better in the rain, I can almost accelerate at full speed even when the ground is all wet with my tires. Cornering, braking and accelerating performance are all absolutely wonderful.

I'm guessing from the crappy performance, you're still running the stock tires, or some other cheap ones.

that's pretty bad... but yeah my pirellis are at the point of replacement. I will drive w/ em till the end of the summer and replace them. I start hydroplaning when it's raining at 65mph

I don't drive much on freeway =P I'm thinking of getting "Kumho Ecsta HP4 716" from TireRack.com - it's $40x4=$160+s/h = about $190 + $50 for installation (somewhere around here) so it'll be about $240 near the end. I don't race or drive much on the freeway so I'll be fine with those =)

I just got the car used about 6 weeks ago, but the tires aren't stock. When I bought the car, I asked them if they would replace the tires and they said no since they didn't make much profit on my car sale =P He told me that I can get some tires at dealer cost from the tire shop they buy from so I'll go check them out first =) Prolly in like 3 weeks when the stupid school is out.

I want to get my suspension fixed first though =P

Whatever you do, don't cheap out on gas either. Only feed your car 91 octane or better! As for the tires. Check out Yokohama AVID V4 or Dunlop A2 Sports. Why not get a decent set of tires now so you don't buy tires now and buy again next year?

I currently use 93 octane Mobil gas =) I still see the same performance as the 87 octane, but the car is too bouncie to tell right now.

When I found the owner's manual that the previous owner of the car left in the car, I also found some old oil change receipts from Firestone and the axles and struts have been messed up since 2001 (Firestone checks everything and tells you what's wrong and recommended). The $15 oil change the guy went for was going to be a $1700 repair =P

After I get suspension fixed, then I'll go see about the tires. I'll go see how much the cheap tires are around here and then how much would it cost to put on and balance. After I find out total, then I'll see how much they are online and I'll probably pay the difference in price.

You don't notice the difference, but I can guarantee your engine does. Just my 2 cents.

It never happened on my dad's Accord or my mom's Civic so I thought there was something wrong mechanically. Since I'm about to get my suspension fixed, I wanted to know if I had something else wrong so I could get both things fixed at once and not waste two of my days for repairs.

Plus I haven't seen it happen to anyone else on the road...

It's because you are new to the car and you need to get used to the pedal. Plain and simple. I was the same way with my car (auto), and I was even worse with my moms car (96 5 speed). Just give it time.
