Thats called a phantom top. It was really popular in the late 80's. They add ribs to look like a convertable top.

Why would they do that to a Max?

I've seen that kind of top on seasoned citizen's Lincoln Town Cars and Cadilac Broughms, but on a Max..........sacriledge !!!!!
