Better gas mileage with O/D off??

Please help me with an argument I am having at work. My co-worker isists that he gets better gas mileage in the city with O/D off (light on) than with O/D on. I think otherwise....or should I not be?

It doesnt matter. In stop and go traffic, you never get up to 4th gear anyway.

Besides less ware and tare on the tranny because it's only using 3 gears, I don't think there would be any noticable difference in mileage, it's mostly stop and go. How often, in the city, do you get the T.C. to lock?

I like to keep OD OFF in the city because the car is more responsive in 3rd gear.

I think he may be trying to say on the highway...hopefully.

Anyway, my arguments stands that city driving sometimes requires burts of up to 45 mph, which makes the car rev higher...which overall makes teh car uses slightly more gas than if it shifts.

njmaxseltd - How will I know if my torque converter is locked?

You can either

a) Feel it
b) Watch your tach drop

cause with o/d off the motor runs at higher rpm at lower speeds "not at idle" sence 4th gear is not used. if i fill my gas tank and drive with o/d on the whole time the tank lasts 3 to 4 days, if i drive with o/d tank lasts 2 days no more. it may just because i got alot mods who knows?

I agree w/this guy..... Keep the OD off on city/local streets, but when on the highway/freeway keep the OD on

In the city, save your tranny, stop abusing it, leave OD off. It will go into 4th even at low speeds (if you coast without acceleration).

215K miles here....I'm really trying to baby the transmission...I don't like how it shifts from 1st to 2nd. Anyway, just a rant.
