Overfilled with ATF

Overfilled with ATF
I recently bought a 1998 28,000 mile Maxima QX (I'm in Britain and Nissan call it a 'QX' here).
The car is in great shape with a full dealer service history, however I just checked the transmission fluid (hot engine, at idle, in 'Park') and I found that the ATF is about a half-inch above the top of the hashed 'HOT' mark on the transmission dip-stick. Obvously the transmission has been overfilled.
What is the best way for me to proceed now?
I'm thinking that rather than try to take just a pint or two of ATF out, I'll just drain the transmission and refill with the correct amount of fresh ATF. But can anyone tell me how much new ATF my transmission should take on a refill? Also, what is the best ATF to use; will any Dexron III do the job?
Apologies if these seem basic questions, but I have very little technical data available to me - a Haynes manual is on order from the US.
Thanks,
Eric
