because i think i might have a bad driver's sidee wheel bearing.

i remember there's a simple test if you jack the car up, but I can't remember what it is exactly.

Jack up the car and shake the tire and wheel holding the top and bottom of the wheel. If there is play then the bearings are probably shot.

Roll the wheel while it is up. If it is hesitant or there is noise, it's bad. A bad bearing is easy to hear, diagnose. Mine are still in good shape with over 100k miles.

Also...you may hear a humm humm humm at higher speeds (40 on up). This may only occur if your bearing is not too worn.

I checked my wheel yesterday, and didn't find play from top to bottom. So my bearings aren't that bad..yet.

Ok...not really nervous...when they seize on me...then I'll worry.

No, then you'll buy a pair of new axles. These things last and last, if they happen to be bad replace them asap.

hehe...notice the smiley ; if they seize....ill probably be upside down on the highway somewhere. It isn't fun trying to control a seized axle/caliper etc. while driving. Yes I will be replacing ASAP....as soon as I have some cash laying around. Will replace strut with bearing.

Though...this bearing has been driven like this for 15K miles. There can be nicks in it that causes humm humm at higher speeds.

Mine sounded like a roaring noise and would get worse when I would turn and put more weight on that side of the car.

Any idea on how much it'd cost to replace the bad bearings?

Thanks.

You have to remove your wheels, brake pads, and rotors. Then remove the whole hub assembly with the bearings and have a shop press out the old one's and press in the new. If you do the work yourself you can save a ton of money.

Do i have to disconnect the strut and the axel and control arm or the hub assembly just comes out?

Maybe a test for a rear wheel bearing... but you're going to always have some resistance and noise from the fronts due to all the driveline bits(cv's, tranny, etc)......

If you take the knuckle/hub assembly off, remember to get an alignment when you're done.

thanks. not bad wheel bearings... looks like there's a pebble stuck in my caliper and there's something else making a low whining noise after driving the car for 20 mins straight or more... CV maybe?
