Budget Exhaust's gen 4 muffler

Does anyone have any experience with Budget Exhaust's muffler? Obviously their y-pipe is quite a fine product, but what about their muffler? Jeff told me that it is a straight through muffler that retains some of the stock sound. Is there any truth to that? Is there another muffler that sounds anything like stock or better?

Thanks!

If you really want one to sound like stock, why not just get a new tip welded onto your stock one? The only reason people buy mufflers is to make their car loud, and if you aren't getting one for that, there's not much other reason to buy one.

I prefer my stock gen 4 muffler but I need to replace it because my muffler really sounds bad. Budget told me that the baffles in my muffler are all shot. That is why I am looking for the next best thing, or something better if possible.

I would go with Budget's muffler but they have been stringing me along for almost a month now and still don't have a muffler for me. That is why I am looking into other options, to see if it is worth it to wait for the Budget muffler.

I've heard Admax98's flowmaster (don't know what model though) at a Vancouver meet. It was hella loud and deep. I don't think he had a y nor b pipe either.

Magnaflow muffler? How does that sound?

Budget doesn't have the Budget Maxima muffler listed on the site. You have to talk to Jeff. But don't expect any prompt service. I've been waiting for a while for my muffler. He keeps telling me to call him "next week".

my guess is that Jeff is stringing you along to get a sale and
that there may not be an actual Maxima muffler...just yet...

my vote is get a cheap (if you can find) 5th gen with variable backpressure.

I'm thinking about getting a dynomax muffler. My stock one is shot and I don't want alot of increase in sound. Flowmaster and Magnaflow are straight through designs (louder) while dynomax is not but still flows better then stock. I think a couple people have dynomax's and say they like the sound and it doesn't drone.

I think already with an intake and ypipe, an exhaust might add a little more than just 1 or 2. You will be lucky to get even 1 hp if you get an exhaust while running a stock ypipe though

Believe me on this one, your baffles ARE NOT busted. It's the small resonator on you Budget B-pipe that causing the noise. Nothing is broken. With my stock muffler, I had the Courtesy B-pipe (small resonator) I had a metalic noise that sounded like pieces of thin gauge metal vibrating and hitting each other. Then I got the Stillen B-pipe with no resonator and the sound got much louder. It sounded pretty bad when the exhaust was cold too. I swore the baffles in my muffler were bad so I picked up another stock 4th gen muffler and put on. The same exact noise was there. Then I went back to the stock B-pipe and the noise completely disappeared. I don't know exactly what the noise is (valve train, flex section, firing order, etc), but it is a normal sound of the VQ which has been dialed out by Nissan exhaust engineers. Your baffles are completely fine. Believe me.

Um, no.

Have you seen how small the inlet is on the stock muffler?

It would be useless to have full 2.5" mandrel bent piping and have the stock muffler. Most people want the flow, not the sound.
On an NA car, tapering of the exhaust (larger to smaller) actually improves exhaust flow by keeping the gases hot. Larger pipes allow the gases to cool which can cause turbulent flow. The primary goal of any exhaust system should be to keep the gases hot. Like anything, too much tapering is not good, but going from a 2.5" y-pipe to a 2.2" B-pipe to a 2.1" muffler really is a pretty good setup on an NA V6. The only real restrictions I see on the 4th gens exhaust is:

1) The y-pipe
2) The crappy S-bend behind the cat in some of the 97+ exhaust systems
3) The nasty crushed pipe right after the B-pipe resonator

Now on forced induction car, it's usually best to run very large piping because the exhaust temps are much higher and there is significantly more air being moved. Tapering is not what you want.

I think so...I wasn't trying to imply that some do and some don't...
I was just pointing out the best feature!

I remember Adam mentioning that he did have a Budget Y-pipe. That would explain the loudness!

I know where you're coming from. I read your thread from a while back. However the sound is getting worse and worse every week from the time that I got it... I don't that is my VQ.
