Did Turkey baster method of changing out PS fluid

I drained out the resovior with a turkey baister and refilled it three times(driving around for 5 min in between each drain and fill) I used about one quart of Dexron III. The fluid contunes to come out red/brown instead of red. I have to buy another quart I guess. I SHOULD be doing it until the resovoir has nice red fluid in it right? How many drain and fills is this gonna take? Thanks

Don't have an exact number, but we've done this on a Camry with around 90K miles at least 5 times over the past few weeks and it's never come out as clean as it goes in. We'd drain as much as possible out, refill, and he'd drive it for a couple of days, and the fluid would be all dirty (almost black) again. We did this four more times with the same results.

We're guessing that the fluid is just picking up the dirt and grunge from inside the hoses, reservoir, etc... as he drives, so it'll probably never get 100% clean again... but at least it's better than not changing it at all.

Instead of using a turkey baster, I just pulled one of the hoses off the resoivoir. If memory serves, one will drain the fluid, one won't... but you can get way more out of it this way since the resoivoir is baffled, and the baster won't reach to the bottom.

I went through about a gallon of ATF. After draining/refilling, I just started the car and turned the wheel back and forth several times... then repeated the procedure. The fluid looks pretty clean now.

You'll want to put a small cup down there when you pull the hose, or the fluid will make a mess on the floor. I believe I just cut the bottom off an old oil bottle.

Good Luck!

There is an opening at the bottom of the baffle inside the PS reservoir. I used an acquarium clear tube and was able to get pass the baffle and drain all fluid from the reservoir. I did the drain and refill 6 times (2 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF) over two days and the fluid looks much better now. Steering effort is about 1/2 of what it used to be. BTW, my car has 76K.

If steering effort is reduced, I don't want it!!! My 95 has way too much steering assist...
