How hard is it to install a battery in my 1997 GXE?

Forgive my complete lack of knowledge, but seeing as how I need a new alternator and battery, and am contemplating doing the alternator install myself, I would like to know how difficult it is to install a battery as well.

Thank you,

HAHAHAHHAHAHA

...sorry, couldn't help it...I mean, an Alternator is 100X more
difficult to install than a battery...if you can swap your Alt,
then a battery is a breeze.

time to change battery = 3 mins.

Its connecting and disconnecting two cables that go on top of the battery. COME ON!

Yeah, you are both right. Its extremely silly for a person with little to no experience working on cars to ask a message board full of car nuts for a little advice/help on a simple topic. Its much better that someone like myself tackle a problem with no knowledge or confidence!

Keep up the over-exhaulted mock-sarcasm which obviously compensates for deficiencies in other areas of life for you! Everyone appreciates it!

hmmm...don't think so...I live a pretty good life actually...

READ THIS:

LIGHTEN UP MAN...we DID help you out...I think it's odd that
someone with, as you put it, a "complete lack of knowledge",
could look into an engine bay and think that they can replace
the alternator (that is pretty much hidden from view and connected
to a bunch of things) and not the battery (which sits right on top).

I'm sorry you feel bad, but like you also said this is a "board
full of car nuts"...and you basically asked us (analogy here) how
hard it is to tie your shoes because you're contemplating tying
double-windsor knot!!! (get it?)

Fine, you answered my question. I have detailed instructions on how to install the alternator which I received from another .org member.

Ok, I'm gunna be nice, there was a recall on the alternators in 97 maximas, you should head over to a dealer and find out if it applies to you. I had mine replaced 100% free. If they won't replace it under the recall, I don't think it would be a good idea to try and replace it yourself, it isn't a job to be attempted if you need to ask about the battery (no offence)

look -- it's NOT that easy to change your own ALT because getting
the tension right in the belt is not a clear-cut thing -- ESPECIALLY if you have little mechanical experience...If you live in the Toronto
area, message me, and I'll try to come by and help...

I don't think that everyone on here is a big ****.
I'm not interested in a pee-ing match, but, it WAS funny.

I've helped MANY MANY MANY people on here, and when I read this,
I could honestly think it was a joke...I thought my earlier
analogy was good, but, how bout another?

"I was gonna go run for the first time, but, how hard is it to walk?"

I even offered to help in person!!!

People DO need to lighten up (perhaps, including yourself)...
I've had MUCH worse said to me, and I'm not offended...

IT'S THE INTERNET!!! geesh...

if u thought this was bad, i got sonned so many times, atleast this guy gets replies, everyone and their mother would throw the "search" link at me, some wouldnt even reply because they were tired of the repetitive questions...

to change a battery takes MAXIMUM 3 minutes, alternator is the bigger concern and i also recommend going to dealer before trying to do it yourself...

i donot need to lighten up. I am fine, i am not like emotional ovetr this. People come to the forus for help. That is one reason they are here for. And people just bash other people when they need help. I do not see why you do that. I know changing a battery is easy, but why don't you teach him instead of bash him. Cause that is one rason we are all here for.

you DO need to lighten up...seriously.

WHERE did I bash this guy???

I LAUGHED...it was funny!!!
Are you telling me I can't laugh at a question???
Did I EVER say anything degrading to this person???

What I DID say, is if you can change an alternator,
you can change a battery...pretty simple.

Why would he even get offended? Was his girlfriend reading it too?
Was he humilated in front of other people?

LIGHTEN UP -- You'll have more fun, and you'll live longer too.

like Meccanoble said, most people would NOT answer the question...
or say "USE the SEARCH function"...or worse...

if people were more proactive and actually LOOKED for help, rather
than the easy out which is post and someone will answer, the server
might be up more often for those asking REALLY technical questions.

take care,
FLO_BOY

Ok. In all fairness we were a bit ahrsh to begin with when answering Kyle Canuck's question. He even apologized ahead of time for his lack of knowledge. But regardless, he did ask a simple question, and we did tell him what to do. Laughing is not bashing. IBTL.

this was actually somewhat entertaining...the way I think of the org is a cross-section of society...everyone asks stupid questions starting out...but an question like that could have gotten a "Search" or at least read in the owners manual of your car. Everyone learns to ask questions that they could not find elsewhere..like in the FAQ, through Search, Owners Manual

It's funny to us and not to him because

most of us know it's much more difficult to replace an alternator than a battery, and he didn't, probably because he hasn't even looked at how those parts are connected. He started by asking for how-to's about each, with no idea that one may be easier than the other.
