I was racing and floored the pedal, before I floored it it was at about 3.5, I held it down and nothing happened, It went to a little over 4 and thats it. I let it go after that, because a light was coming up. My question is why didn't the rpm's go higher, shouldn't they fly up immediately after I floor it, is there any reason this didn't happen? I was doing about 50 in 3rd.

if anyone knows please respond because I didn't rip him and that's horrible since it wasn't the fastest car in the world. Also, i'm not a very experienced stick driver but on my automatic: flooring the pedal=rpm's going up and up and up. I'm very interested to know why this didn't happen here?

Easy answer, your automatic shifts for you, but your manual won't. You get to decide when you need to shift.

At 50, you could have shifted into 2nd, it's good till about 62mph, or whenever redline hits.

 

I understand, but shouldn't they go up either way? Also, is there anything wrong w/the car since they didn't, or is this perfectly normal?

 

the rpms should go up gradually...all the way til redline
it shouldn't stop before redline if you're flooring the pedal...did yours stop?

 

mine weren't anywhere near redline, they were at about 4 and change. also, my speed was roughly 55 or so in third. when i floored it, it seemed like they did "stop" any idea why that is?

 

someone told me there might be something wrong with the fuel intake, since the rpm's didn't go up when i floored it, can that be it?

 

you have to understand that the rpm's wont "jump" like in an auto.
if you're looking for that 3k rpm to 5k rpm "jump"...thats a downshift

you have a manual...thus have to shift "manually" lol

if you want to go really fast...downshift to 2nd...take that to redline, then shift into 3rd

if the tach just STOPPED altogether, then your car has a problem...but if it was gradually rising...its your driving

if you're in higher gears...and not so high rpms...don't expect to get fantastic acceleration without downshifting

 

You never should have sold your automatic.

 

trade me your 97 5 spd for my 97 auto.. your rpm problems will be solved

In a car with a standard transmission, when the car is in gear, the engine speed is directly related to the ground speed, because the tires are linked to the engine through the drivetrain. When you engage the clutch, it will essentially "disconnect" it, and your engine will rev freely. This is what happens with an automatic, you punch it, the transmission takes the vehicle out of gear, then the engine revs up and then it drops it back into gear and off you go.

This is my amateur understanding of this anyway, but I think my experience matches yours Anyway, try using pushing in the clutch pedal if you want to see the tach needle move.

Ya..... uh, you need to downshift.. yah.. Believe it or not, when you floor it in an automatic, it downshifts .. You might wanna read up about how manual transmissions work.
