ok 95 maxima gxe. the car turns over normal. Starter sounds fine. while the car is turning over it sometimes doesn't seem to fire. it sounds like it is trying to start once and a while catching a little but not enought to start. if i press the accelerator down just a little while turning it over the car will start. let e know if you have any ideas

thanks

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Hmm insufficient fuel or air. It's hard to diagnose the problem. Your car isn't throwing a code is it? If it isn't than it's hard to say it's a sensor like TPS or anything. Fuel filter, injectors, spark plugs, might be having a problem. Could be somewhere in firing, fuel delivery, or oxygen/throttle sensors.

Your car does not start readily when you crank with your foot off the gas pedal. Your car does start readily when you step gently on the gas pedal. I'd say that absolves the fuel pump and fuel filter from blame. The engine is getting enough fuel, but not enough air.

When your foot is off the gas, the throttle blade is completely closed. That means all the air which gets to the engine is supplied by the Idle Air Control Valve - Auxiliary Air Valve.

I suggest you test the IACV-AAC and the Throttle Position Sensor.

Daniel B is right actually. However, I doubt it's the TPS. One can always tell when that sensor is going. The car will tend to jolt at lower RPMs. If he is ONLY having a problem starting than I doubt it's the TPS.

The starter on the 95 is terrible. I have a 95 GLE and I have the same problem. I think it is the starter, not the fuel filter or any thing else as a matter of fact. nissan wants 500 ti fix it

The starter motor has only one job: to crank the engine fast enough for it to fire. If you really have the same problem, the starter motor is not to blame.

This is not to say the '95 starter motors are wonderful. If you have a slow-crank or no-crank problem, the starter motor could be at fault. However, battery or cable problems will also produce the same symptoms.
