Asphault sheeting like what they use on roofing jobs.. Seriously.. But it's heavy. Then again, Dynamat isn't exactly made of feathers.

There was a thread about this a while back and if I remember right - nadir_s and a bunch of others did some research into this. You might want to PM him or something.

what u can do is put towels in the trunk lid.... you are going to have like a 2-3in spread there and put towels between that spread and it will quiet down the rattling

Yeppers...some guys on the 3rd gen board (4dsc.com) have had good success with something called "Peal-n-Seal" Home Depot, Lowe's...that kind of place should have it. The kind they were using had the asphalt layer with an aluminium foil backing. It's the material that roofers will put along the eaves and valleys of a roof when they're redoing. It's sticky and heavy just like Dynamat. Like $50-60 for a 100-150 sq. ft. roll.

I love my old rags. I have a fair amount of Dynamat in my trunk and doors, and I still had some rattles. One day I was just experimenting and stuck rags in the A-pillars of the car and that took care of the squeking from there, and some in the real panel, this also worked there. Soon after I stuffed rags where I would hear some rattles, and this worked great for me. Plus the rags don't cost no where near as much as the Dynamat and are way lighter

. I mainly did this out of frustration and curiosity. Now I need to fix some new rattles from the roof. I may go with the Dynaliner, or maybe more rags. If you mainly want to go for sound/road noise dampening I would use Dynamat or anything like it, for little rattles,buzzes, or squeaks the rags work.

You can get a bulk pack (~36 sq ft?) of Dynamat Extreme for like $135 shipped off the web. Just look around a little. I was freaked out by the price until I looked around the web a little...those stores will rip you off bad.

For that money I will def take dynamat of the smellier, cheaper alternatives.

www.fatmat.com but if you've got a lot of boom in your trunk, you are still going to have to stuff something in the trunk lid because I don't think its possible to get anykind of sounddeadener inside the trunklid inback of the M A X I M A emblem. You could also try 4 cans of great stuff. I used 2 so far, stopped the rattles where it was, but since i didn't fill up all the gaps, i still got some.

At first when I started reading on their website, I was stoked--they're more than 50% cheaper than Dynamat! However, Dynamat posted a very interesting counter-article to Brown Bread:

http://www.dynamat.com/PDF/SounddBat...ound_dBate.pdf

Now the question is, does this stuff really stink like tar and how long does it last?

Requin6 brought up a great point: FatMat. For less than the 36sq ft. bulk pack of Dynamat Extreme, you get 100sq ft. of FatMat. Very comparable performance. And if you just need 36sq ft., FatMat is just $50 plus shipping.

fatmat had a tar like smell to it. the smell lasted 3 days in 85 degree heat. 3 days is not a bad price to pay by my standards. it went away and the car smells like normal.

not sure y, buy my fatmat had almost no smell whatsoever and I'm in VA. Its like 85+ degrees everyday this week. But I only put in like 15sq feet so far, so maybe it will smell more once I get the other 85feet in.

I remember reading a post about a guy who used the "Great Stuff" or equivalent expanding foam in his trunk lid. He sprayed it in the cracks and stuff, then shut his trunk. It expanded, and dried, and sealed his trunk shut. I believe it took him a day or 2 to get in to his trunk (through the backseat after taking out the sheetmetal plate). Not sure how he cleaned it up, as the stuff is pretty impervious to chemicals. I don't even know if he got the sound-deadening results he was after. But after what he went through, I hope so. Lesson learned. If using "Great Stuff", leave the trunk open while it fully cures and keep it away from the latch mechanism. I'd also do it a little at a time (as that stuff is called "expanding foam").

When you install something like this, do you have to cover the entire surface to get the affects? I mean, if I added this stuff to the back of the seats and rear deck, would that suffice? Does it have
to be one big sheet?

example: where {} are the edges of the trunk
where [X] is the sound-deadening material

{ [XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX] }
{ [XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX] }
{ [XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX] }
{__[XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX][XXXXXXX]___}

as you can see, there is space between the sheets and at the
edges of the trunk, so, would this be effective?? or, would it
have to look more like:

{[XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX]}

Thanks!

Lmao. I had that problem. It was worsened by a box of 2 12" that wasy in my way. I think this would work but putting one can at a time, maybe once a day or so. All that foam simply cannot dry when applied. It did work though for a short period of time.

Here's another less expensive option: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...oduct_ID=7083. This goes on great with a heat gun and roller. It will smell a little for a couple weeks, but it goes away.
